Product Description

It takes more than just good ingredients to start and build a successful artisan food business. In addition to doing the actual cooking or baking, food entrepreneurs are responsible for hundreds of decisions that impact the future of their business. From which marketing tools are best to how to increase operational capacity to dealing with government regulations and oversight to trying to make everything work within a limited budget, the sheer number of decisions can seem daunting at times.

HANDMADE is like the advisory council food entrepreneurs wish they had. Based on in-depth interviews with eight food artisans from a diverse range of backgrounds, this book shares with readers the triumphs and challenges these entrepreneurs have faced. Each entrepreneur’s story includes the practical tips and tactics they’ve used to help their day-to-day business grow. These real-life recipes for success will inspire you to start your own small food business or provide you with the guidance and new ideas you seek to take your company to the next level.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth your time 10 Dec 2012

This book is not worth the time or money. There is little information about starting a food business. Its more like a bunch of magazine interviews. Two of the businesses are already defunct.

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspiring read! 23 May 2012

I happened upon Jennifer Lewis' blog for culinary entrepreneurs purely by chance. I thought her website was incredibly informative, so I purchased Handmade. What a great read! Unlike most instructional how-to books, it is lively and well-written with inspiring stories about real people with real companies "made from scratch." It definitely pushed me towards starting my own business. I will definitely purchase more of Jennifer Lewis' books. She really knows her stuff!

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspiration and Insight 3 May 2012
By JoyousOne - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I have a cliché dream: to unshackle myself from my desk job and open a small food business. But like so many with the same dream, I have no background in the food industry. This book was very inspirational. Most of the entrepreneurs featured started their businesses with little or no food industry experience, and they have not failed. On the contrary, they used their past life experiences and business savvy to create successful new careers and thriving businesses.

Their stories alone are enough to make this a worth while read for anyone who wants the confidence to pursue their small food business dream, but having the entrepreneur's strategies broken out into easy to understand 'recipes' makes this book an invaluable resource.

5.0 out of 5 stars Self Education 25 Nov 2012

I finished reading a self help entrepreneurial book about starting a food business. The book is titled “Hand Made” and the author is Jenifer Lewis.

Great book if you have that entrepreneurial drive in your. Always asking yourself or others, “how did they start that business?” You do not need to be a foodie or want to start a food business to read the book. I am neither. The book gives stories of entrepreneurial growth from around the country. All the stories are from small business, that is what interests me.

Jenifer Lewis, the author, is straight to the point and highlights the best information. Great Job Jen! What is your next book? I would like to read a book about small schools.

Thanks,
Ron Grosinger
