Review

Jenny has once again excelled herself and produced a brilliant book full of wonderful purses that you will just love to have amongst your own bag collection, or that would make beautiful hand made gifts for some special friends. All the techniques are explained in full, showing you how to make bags with a real personal touch. The instructions are clear and accompanied by step-by-step photographs, leaving you with every confidence that you too can make all of the projects and more. --Fabrications, Issue 50

This super book provides a great introduction to quilting and free machine embroidery techniques while making some lovely purses in the process. Six basic designs are included for dainty evening bags that are large enough to carry a few essentials whilst displaying some creative needlework. Variations throughout provide further inspiration for decorative stitching and embellishment. This is a great 'learning' book as each design incorporates a number of techniques including stippling, couching, beading and applique. There are exercises on free machine stitching to help the reader practise their skills and a very useful section on making original fabrics using simple techniques such as weaving and bondable fibres. Close up photographs and clear instructions make this an easy guide to use and it is a good starting point for those who would like to develop their sewing skills into more creative areas. --Sewing World, Dec 2007

This book has success written all over it...success for you! If you have ever thought about making a purse, Jenny has taken the guesswork out of it. She has provided lists of materials and embellishments; ideas for making your own fabrics;beautiful, bright photographs;clear, easy-to-follow instructions;and so much more. Simple shapes become great purses using quilting and free-motion embroidery. With all of her inspiring ideas, designs, and know-how, you can't miss --Quilting Arts Magazine, Dec/Jan 08

small is beautiful 13 Oct 2007
By Elaine B Reader TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The book gives very clear instructions for making 6 beautiful and colourful small bags- all clutch style, and all lovely. There are a couple of chapters on techniques and embellishments but no waffle - the book is full of what you want - photo's of actual items being made, with text relating to what you can see - step by step and easy to follow. All are decorated with things like buttons and covered washers, sequins or shisha glass, ribbons and threads. The purses don't need large pieces of fabric and can use up lots of the stash fabric and embellishments most craft sewers end up with. If you have to buy new it won't cost a fortune to start any of these items. A well presented book, lots of inspiration for craft workers and a good variation of work methods to try. Love it.

Beautiful, Great Directions, and Inspiration 10 Feb 2009

Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I truly love the layout of Rolfe's books and how she provides clear instructions, methods of developing and trying some of her techniques in making your own handbags. The use of threads, various fabrics, and how she can vary her design is GREAT! This and her other book on "Bags" are wonderful for those that may have been a bit timid to try out some of the techniques she makes look so simple...and they are if you practice and play around with fabrics and other materials in order to produce truly unique purses. I have only one fault - too few designs. Yet, as an artist in my own right, I have to say BRAVO - these purses have provided a great stepping stone in developing my own designs, using some of the author's methods. Therefore, I feel that this book is great for the beginning to intermediate purse designer. One can get other ideas for purse structure from reviewing the history of purses/handbags, modifying purse patterns (especially those unique ones from specialty stores), and so many other places including thinking about your own needs and desires for a unique purse of your own.

Therefore, practice some or all of the technques in this book. Try a few of the patterns making your own purses and then expand into your own design trend using skills garnered from this book. You will be amazed at what can develop, particularly after using Rolfe's book on "Handmade Embroidered Purses." PS: I also love the fact that these purses are embroidered using free machine work rather than handwork - it really speeds up the process towards completion of a purses. Yet, if you wanted to add your own handwork, great - it will definitely make your purse even more desirable.
