Product Description

Product Description

There is nothing quite like owning a stylish, unique handmade bag that you have created yourself. Jenny Rolfe has used quilting and free machine embroidery techniques to create a stunning collection of bags for all occasions. All the techniques are explained fully, including how to make your own fabrics and cords to give your bags that really personal touch. The fabrics used include cottons, silks and felts, as well as the more exotic metallic organza, chiffon, velvet and netting. Variegated and metallic machine threads add texture, and the bags are further embellished with beads, sequins, shisha mirrors and wire in various colours. Detailed step-by-step photographs accompany easy-to-follow text, and a sequence of projects illustrate how to construct, decorate and complete a range of different-shaped bags - one for every style and occasion.

About the Author

Jenny Rolfe has been interested in sewing for as long as she can remember; as a child her mother taught her how to make her own doll's clothes. Jenny taught herself traditional patchwork and quilting in the 1970s and then learnt about design by studying for a City and Guilds qualification at Tresham Institute, Kettering. She has received many awards for her quilts and hangings which have been exhibited both at home and abroad. She now teaches and gives workshops around the country. Jenny lives with her husband and dogs in Fleckney in Leicestershire.

A great book for everyone who wants to make individual handbags for gifts or their own use. There are colour photos throughout showing various colourways for individual projects. Instructions are clear and follow a logical process with accompanying photos.

Very inspiring! 25 Nov 2007
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Although I've made a few bags I've not tried machine embroidery yet so I bought this book hoping it would show me how to get started - and wow! It offers so much more! The bag designs themselves are imaginative and easy to make, the colour step-by-step closeup photographs, rather than diagrams, are really helpful, and I now feel confident about trying out the techniques for myself. It's great to see photos too of variations on each project, because it's often quite difficult to mentally visualise something done in different colours or in different fabrics.

I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who's feeling a bit hesitant about taking the first steps towards machine embroidery, but even if you don't want to do that, the bag patterns could just as easily be made unadorned.
