Review

This is a superb book for anyone interested in making handmade books. Learn how to make a variety of books - that's what is superb about this book, it allows your imagination to take flight making star books, heart-shaped books and so much more. Instructions are included for the books plus basics. They are practical and easy to follow. The book is beautifully produced with good photography and design. Imagine giving personal, unique handmade books as gifts - you can with this book.-KarenPlatt.co.uk If you enjoy making mini albums, this book will take your scrapbooking to the next level. Clever papercrafter Sue Roddis teaches you how to make and bind your own books. From simple zigzag shapes to advanced stitched bindings, you'll be amazed at what you can produce with just basic craft materials. Sue also shows you how to decorate your book covers with paint, stamps, ribbons and embellishments, so you'll be able to produce complete books ready to give to a friend or fill with photos, journaling and more.-Papercraft Inspirations This is a book that takes papercrafting to a new dimension with an array of books to make which are quite amazing. Sue Roddis takes the reader through the basics of book making before she offers eight step-by-step projects for you to work. The photography accompanying the text is informative and shows you how to do everything. As well as each completed book, there are examples of alternatives to encourage you to give your own design interpretation. There are full-size templates included where necessary, too. If you want to create something unique which will be a lasting and useful example of your skills, one of these books is ideal.-Classic Stitches Handmade Decorative Books, by Sue Roddis, is an excellent book. I had to do a double-take when first looking at the book in order to remind myself that all of the decorative books can be made at home with the minimum of materials and supplies. Sue Roddis' attention to detail and artistic flair transforms simple pieces of paper and card into three dimensional works of art, using relatively simple techniques. Any enthusiastic card maker will be able to undertake with confidence the decorative book projects. One of the joys of Handmade Decorative Books is that a stamper can use stamps and materials that they already own. While a full supplies list is provided for each project, if you want to add your own style to a book (Sue's taste is definitely whimsical), then it is simple to use stamps that better reflect your own style. I enjoyed all of the projects in the book and if I had to pick one as my favorite then it would be the flag book. I like the way that Sue has demonstrated this unusual book style and the variations provide plenty of inspiration for more ideas. I would recommend decorative bookmaking to any rubber stamper or cardmaker who is looking for new challenges and I would recommend Handmade Decorative Books as offering a perfect introduction to the craft. More experienced decorative book makers may be familiar with many of the types of books covered, however Sue Roddis has an innovative approach which will offer plenty to interest even the most experienced of readers.-About.com This book shows how to make decorated books, starting with simple techniques such as book ring and accordion-folded books, before moving on to flag, piano-hinge, star and other types. Learn how to first make and then decorate them with stamping, collage, stitching and embellishments. This step-by-step guide offers simple and challenging ideas and crafters will love the colourful projects and great designs. It really is an innovative, practical guide containing all you need to know to create unique, decorated books.-Machine Knitting Monthly A simple yet effective book that takes scrapbooking and bookbinding and merges the two crafts together. Fans of one craft or the other will find this book inspiring and offers a new areas to explore. The book shows how to make detailed decorated memory-style books, starting with simple techniques such as using book rings and accordion-folding, but then moves on to more advanced methods, from the more unusual piano hinge style to the more traditional stitched spine. As well as bookbinding, this book guides the reader through the projects from start to finish looking at scrapbooking techniques, rubber stamping, colouring and embellishing, offering professional results whilst learning new techniques. This book suits both beginners and more confident crafters, with something new to learn for all from this esteemed craft author.-Popular Crafts

Best for construction 25 May 2010
Format:Paperback
Well presented book with good guidance to constructing various styles of book. Most of the ideas are based on using stamps or existing images, which could be adapted to make the books more personal. For something more 'creative' try Gwen Diehn's The Decorated Journal, the pair together are a good starting point for anyone interested in creating their own journal or books as gifts.
