Book Description

8 Dec 2011
In these days of mass produced objects, it is comforting to know that there are still craftspeople working by hand and creating wonderful and unique jewellery, ceramics, textiles, furniture or other crafts. Many draw their inspiration from nature and the world around them, each has a unique approach to their work and the area they have chosen to specialize in. Over 90 contemporary designer-makers from England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland are featured in this book. Working in a variety of materials from metals to plastic to textiles to wood and more, these artisans represent the best of contemporary British design. One designer works with antique textiles repurposing them into contemporary designs. Another creates delicate jewellery inspired by wild flowers. One jewellery maker melts down unwanted silver and creates new pieces that will develop their own history. Still others work across a variety of areas following where their creativity leads them. The book contains over 200 images with each designer-maker's work illustrated with photographs of their work, often commissioned specifically for Handmade in Britain. There is information about each individual s background and their creative philosophy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have 6 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback
Every artisan has written its insights with as much passion as they put on their creations, some of the best gathered in this book with many stunning pictures adding value and references for us to explore, enjoy and follow.
Seems every little detail has been cared for from the size to the format, making it a little gem.
Congratulations to the author. I can only recommend to read and share Handmade in Britain, it also makes a beautiful present.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of British and long may it continue. 16 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback
Handmade in Britain is the brainchild of Piyush Suri, a textile designer with the vision to create a platform for the arts and craft community in the UK. This platform started off as a series of shows with the same title in which a group of makers have to pass a selection panel in order to show and sell their work. This book was launched last year as a commemorative issue to mark the ongoing success of the shows, the work of makers and of Suri's efforts to bring the quality of British craftsmanship to the attention of the world. So the platform Suri created is gaining momentum and width as it develops and matures and as long as British artisanal work continues to stun and amaze, long may this fine effort continue to prosper.

The photography in the book is very lush, thanks to the talented Matthew Booth who is fast gaining the reputation of being the maker's preferred photographer. The range of work is impressive but so is the quality of each piece. The makers are profiled in a short piece which serves more to provide a glimpse of who they are and what they do rather than an in-depth interview.

This book is testimony to the history, richness, innovation and adaptability of British design, from the eclectic to the traditional. It makes a splendid gift but is also a reference book of what makes British design so very exciting and desirable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Handmade in Britain 13 Mar 2012
By RachelB
Format:Paperback
I can unreservedly recommend this book, which features the creations of some of the most unique `designer/makers' in Britain at the moment. Lovers of the
art and craft revival will surely adore this book, which is not only an enjoyable and engaging read, but also an inspirational and informative source-book for all budding designers and collectors. Handmade in Britain highlights the value of skilled craftsmanship, and the diversity of cultures and mediums which make up Britain's craft and design scene. From hand felting and embroidery which mimics the multi-layered nature of memory to surrealist silver candlesticks which appear to melt along with the candle, this book truly has something to captivate everyone.
