I first saw this film many years ago, and it is a measure of its quality that I have not forgotten it. It is one of the best of the films addressing the consequences handgun ownership - dramatic but balanced, entertaining but also making good points, and refraining from making a judgement - you have to do that.

The heroine is a teacher who moves from New England to Texas. Dating a handsome lawyer she is 'date raped' after being threatened in a very ambiguous manner with a pistol. She is traumatized, and the police are not interested. From being very anti-gun, she decides to address her fears by learning how to shoot. She is dedicated (almost obsessive) about this and becomes very good at combat shooting. She buys her own handgun, a Colt Python, and learns that pretty much any Texas resident can do this.

Throughout the film she is very serious, understandable due to her trauma but also representing the 'uptight' Northerner. The Texas men around her are relaxed, supportive but in in a macho way. This is a difference in lifestyles, and she masters what she sees as the Texan way - use a gun to solve your problems. But she does so in a way that retains the moral high ground, and ends her fascination with the handgun.

Entertaining, thought-provoking. Perhaps a bit simple, but all the more memorable for that.

A film about an attractive High School teacher (Kathleen) who is working away from home in Texas who despite being lonely and a bit homesick is befriended by a "Ladies Man" Lawyer (Larry) who wants to start a relationship with her. After initially being receptive to his advances Larry makes one wrong move resulting in Kathleen rejecting Larrys "hands on " approach which annoys Larry who uses his gun as a threat to make Kathleen sleep with him.Kathleen goes through all the principled procedures to try to bring her rapist to justice but is frustrated by the system and so decides to take the law in her own hands and to teach Larry a hard, harsh lesson which she does.Revenge is sweet for Kathleen and Larry is left to reflect deeply on his conduct in a hospital bed at the films conclusion.

Handgun is about woman who has been raped. It is about how she manages that unwelcome event in her life. It is about how skilled she is and how much her skills remain unappreciated and unrecognised by those closest to her. As a rape counsellor in my past, I believe this film is an accurate and brilliantly portrayed piece which should be shown in senior schools and colleges as a true reflection of the consequences of rape.

This is a classic of a film for anyone who enjoys a well written script;performed by an outstanding cast of virtually unknown actors and actresses, who bring to life the characters that they play. The story unfolds effortlessly, and the viewer is never for a moment bored or restless. The tautness of the film owes much to the Director, who never for a moment lets up on the action. This really is a superb motion picture at an amazing price. Treat yourself and buy it,then lean back and enjoy it!!

There's a sense of reality to this movie. The acting, from pretty much every actor, is convincing and natural. Thought-provoking story, interesting, well worth a watch.
