This is a well-recorded jazz-album and a great way to make a start with listening to jazz; nice rythm-section, soulful horns, good vocals by Mario. Highly recommended for summer-evenings and long car-drives!

I'd never heard of Mario Biondi before I caught the title track of this album being played on an excellent lunch time radio show. I was instantly captivated enough to buy the album for myself. I am pleased to say that every track is superb and the sound quality is excellent. If you like mainstream jazz and want something uplifting then I think you'll like this one. Highly recommended.

If you're looking for a nice jazz sounding CD this offering might do the trick. From the city of Catania, Sicily in Italy comes smooth sounding vocalist Mario Biondi with his album Handful of Soul.

Biondi's voice has influences of soul, latin, and rhythm & blues which is backed up by his jazz quintet.

With notable tracks such as `A Child Runs Free', `Rio De Janeiro Blue', `A Handful Of Soul', `On A Clear Day', `No Trouble On The Mountain', the Bill Withers song `I'm Her Daddy' and the excellent `This Is What You Are'.

Biondi's unique voice results in this album sounding great, with the latin-jazz sound of the band. Definitely recommended.

Lou Rawls, has never been equalled of bettered. From, his days with Sam Cooke, to the fantastic Tobacco Road. This guy - from Europe! is the Business, the D.B's. Buy this and chill to the tingle of a fabulous toe curling voice and great arrangements and production. Better still buy two and give one to your best mate.

Having come across Sun through the connection with the Jazz Funk of Incognito - I searched for other recordings from this wonderful vocalist. Mario Biondi's voice is incredibly deep, but he also has a great range and musicality.

It was a pleasant surprise therefore, to discover this album, made with a Jazz quintet, recorded in Italy. This is high quality, acoustic Jazz from musicians who can really play, but devote their efforts to supporting the song and adding very tasteful solos. Trumpet and Flugelhorn, from Fabrizio Bosso are particularly impressive - melodic, skillful and fitting the mood perfectly.

The main part of the album is devoted to groove-based tunes that are clearly influenced by Brazilian rhythms and these are enhanced by percussionist Sandro de Bellis. Ostinato double bass patterns fit perfectly with drums and percussion to make for a real Latin feel to the tunes. "Rio De Janeiro Blue" emphasises this trend along with stand-out track "This is What You Are".

There is the odd Jazz standard "On a Clear Day" and a few ballads - but mostly the band are grooving and swinging their way through a dozen great tracks, recorded very well to make the whole sound like a classic Blue Note album - that is a real "classic" Jazz sound and feel. Biondi is on top form throughout in an album that should appeal to more than just a Jazz audience.

Definitely a nod here to the old jazz dance days of the 80s. Good players and a really different and refreshing vocal sound. Could say a cross between Barry White and Jon Lucien. The sound is very accomplished and not (as often happens with "latin jazz") contrived or "jazz light."

One of those albums I'll be sticking on in the car for those long motorway trips!

This is a great example of the fantastic jazz coming out of Italy at the moment, I only wish the Mario Biondi album "if" were available to download. I arrived at Mario Biondi and the High Five Quintet from listening to albums from label mates Nicola Conte and Alessandro Magnanini.

I really like the download, it's a gently easy listen. It can get slightly monotonous if you listen to it too often, hence the 4 rather than rating.
