Heard this on the radio and wanted it for our own collection. Excellent value and well worth including in our favourite music.

Good 21 Dec 2010
Format:MP3 Download
An excellent production, although the major pieces (Hallelujah Chorus, Unto us a child is born, etc) do seem to lack a little punch. Very good value for what it is, and something I frequently listen to.

the best and most glorious and moving ever...barr none! 18 Dec 2007

This is the Messiah that I grew up loving. For all the sad reviews of its ponderousness I say they are wrong. Perhaps I am prejudiced by the fact that this was my mother's favorite, what with her being trained as a mezzo suprano for the opera and then becoming an academic with a doctorate in music. Perhaps I am prejudiced by having heard dozens upon dozens. This pace is perfection. The tenor floats above the choir and then lingers...which is what he, and all the other soloists are supposed to do in this piece of holy wonderment. So many people cut the piece into a brisker tempo so that they can get through it in the amount of time most Americans can endure sitting with out their adhd kicking in. That is akin to doing Wagner's Ring in just one sitting. Give this a chance. You should grow to love it deeply and profoundly...the oldest of the recording sounds do not get in the way of the beauty of the interpretation.

Comfortable and Familiar -- great value! 12 Jan 2008
By M. Lopez - Published on Amazon.com
I'll be frank. I bought this set because of the price. How can you beat under $4 for a whole oratorio? I was apprehensive because of some of the very negative reviews, however I was pleasantly surprised. Ok, it may not be the pinnacle of recording quality, and probably isn't the most historically accurate interpretation. However, as an "old school" musician (very old), I didn't find it offensive in the least. If you are very particular about your recording quality and historical authenticity, this is not the recording for you. This is a comfortable, familiar rendition for people like me who just want to hear "Handel's Messiah" the way you remember singing it in college chorus (ok, a very very good college chorus with paid soloists!).

Old Fashioned Sincerity 30 Dec 2006
By R. C. Ross - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This is not the best recording of Messiah but it is by no means a disaster. Susskind was an able conductor with a valid view of this great piece. The recording from the 1950s is more than adequate (there is some roughness in the treble but it is full and clear - though some edits are very obvious indeed). The orchestra is excellent and the choir sing well. The soloists - all of them - are superb, among the very best in any version of Messiah! Susskind's tempos are slow by modern standards but there is good rhythmical bounce and a genuine sense of the greatness of the piece. If you can adjust to the broad tempos and the big scale conception then you will discover important aspects of this masterpiece in this performance - and the set costs next to nothing!
