The English Concert's performance of the two suites of Water Music are undoubtably superior to anything played for the entertainment of George I as he floated down the Thames on that summer evening in 1717. Strings are vibrato-free, woodwind more mellow and brass less strident than in modern-instrument performances; the result is uncontrived and pleasant on the ear. Handel makes much play of the alternations between the instrumental groups, an aspect which Trevor Pinnock's astute direction helps to convey. Pinnock draws crisp, energetic playing and several movements come across with a delightful freshness.

Trevor Pinnock has the magic touch and this is a superb recording of Handel's fine Water Music.

This man, Handel, he had a handle on everything; including himself. A great CD; full of musik to cheer the hearty and the hoary. Buy it.
