5.0 out of 5 stars I would give it 6 stars if I could 23 Jan 2004
By Ruth Ludlam VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
I was given this recording for Christmas, and I have not been able to take it out of my CD player. Although it is Handel, which meant that I was expecting great things anyway, I was pleasantly suprised when it surpassed all my expectations.
Not only are Handel's melodies hauntingly beautiful (I'm thinking particularly of the suspensions in the second movement of the first piece) but the superb musicianship of the performers is also a delight. However, it is the way that Bowman and Fisher's voices blend together like a good whiskey that makes this recording such a pleasure to listen to. They set each other off perfectly, creating a warm, harmonious effect that I never expected from a union of counter-tenor and soprano ranges. This is so delicious I couldn't quite believe it. I'm afraid the samples don't do it a lot of justice, but they will give you a brief taste of the full flavour, albeit watered down. Unfortunately I can't quite get away from this whiskey metaphor, so I might as well tell you that this recording will leave you intoxicated and hopelessly in love with it, like I am.
All the duets on this disc are superbly done (although they're in Italian, so you might not understand the words). The musicians responsible are the excellent King's Consort, who use instruments that are as closely contemporary as possible to the composition of the music - there's an 'archlute' (cool!) as well as a harpsichord and an imitation Stradivarius for your listening pleasure. They have done lots of other good recordings with these soloists, but somehow this one even puts those in the shade.
These duets are, by their nature, short and sweet: about 2-3 minutes long. This means that there's no epic musical development or gradiosity, but this makes them suitable for all moods and occasions.

This is utterly marvellous. I've owned it since it came out ( in 1991?) and have never tired of it. Buy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellently performed but 'samey' 3 Aug 2011
By E. L. Wisty TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
This disc presents nine of the ten cantatas which Handel wrote for soprano and alto - seven come from his Italian period (1706-9 or 10) or possibly shortly thereafter - the chronology is doubtful around that time; the other two are from the three which he wrote in the 1740s. Given that the total time of this CD is 63.5 minutes I can't see why the third of these has been missed out unless it is longer than about 11 minutes.

Gillian Fisher and James Bowman are indeed a fabulous vocal combination, but I find it difficult to hand out a full five stars. Excellent though these cantatas are, it's all a little too samey. Most discs of cantatas performed by a single artist are broken up with sonatas, which mirrors the performing practice of the day as well as breaking up the monotony a little for the listener. If this had been a double disc set, with a few sonatas and/or a handful of solo cantatas from each singer thrown in, it could have been quite something.

The booklet provides notes in English and French. Full libretti are supplied with English translations, and a French translation given separately.

5.0 out of 5 stars handel: italian duets 24 Jan 2003

PLEASE DO NOT PUBLISH THIS REVIEW !
I am using this space because I don't know where else to enter comments. There is on error in your "ON THIS CD:" area.
I purchased this CD because of the information below:
7.No, di voi non vo' fidarmi, duet for 2 sopranos & continuo, HWV 189 Altra volta incatenarmi[this is the 2nd mvmt of this duet]
HWV 189 that was listed above, is the version for two sopranos. The actual version on the CD is HWV 190, the version for a soprano and an alto. I was very disappointed when I could not find the HWV 189 version on any of the CD tracks.
I have been having a difficult time finding a CD with "No, di voi non vo' fidarmi, duet for 2 sopranos" that is actually sung by two sopranos, instead of a soprano and an alto. I was so happy when I read item 7 in your "on this cd" page, that I ordered it immediately.<...
Sincerely,
Garbon Devall...
