If one can believe that there remains any niche of Handel's output that has been neglected in 2009, this may be it: Italian arias written during his stay in Rome. Meticulously researched and beautiful performed.

Please note that Amazon have managed to screw up by merging two products into one here. I have thus reviewed both on this one page. If you are looking for the Bonizzoni disc, read the first review. If you are instead looking for the Valentina Variiale/Musica Perduta disc, read the second review.

***REVIEW #1: BONIZZONI***

This is the penultimate of seven magnificent discs of cantatas written by the youthful Handel for various patrons during his Italian sojourn, directed by Fabio Bonizzoni and accompanied by the instruments of the ensemble "La Risonanza". The trio of vocalists, reprising their appearance on the previous disc in the series, are sopranos Roberta Invernizzi and Yetzebel Arias Fernández, and alto Romina Basso.

The cantatas and performances here perhaps feel in the main slightly 'heavier' than the other discs and so maybe don't delight quite so much. Four and a half stars, not quite the five as for the other discs, but still more than worthy of collecting.

Track listing:

HWV 143 "Olinto, pastore Arcade (Oh! Come chiare e belle)" (Invernizzi, Fernández, Basso)
HWV 82 "Duello amoroso (Amarilli vezzosa)" (Fernández, Basso)
HWV 81 "Alpestre monte" (Fernández)

Total time 68:35

Packaged in fold-out digipack with attached booklet which contains notes in English, French, German & Spanish, plus libretti alongside translations in all four aforementioned languages.

This performance conforms to all the now well-established norms for baroque performance and the soprano's performance is accurate and lively if not particularly distinguished.

As a great lover of the Gardiner Bach Cantatas cycle, this Handel came as a great surprise. Simply wonderful.
