What a pleasure it has been, discovering Handel's 'Solomon', through Paul mc'creesh's new recording.I will not attempt to review in detail the contents of three full discs of exquisite music, but will offer an overall impression, with attention paid to one or two special aspects, and musical moments. Of course, for Andreas Scholl fans, his participation on this recording may well be a decisive factor, and his performance in the title role is indeed fantastic, but ( and how fortunate!) equal respects must also be paid to the other singers too: Peter Harvey and Paul Agnew, give splendid performances (sample Agnew's "Golden Columns", on disc three, and you'll realise that the set was worth buying just for that!), not to mention Susan Gritton, as the Queen of Sheba, whose performance of her 'farewell' aria is very special .Add to that the voices of Alison Hagley, Inger dam-jensen, and Susan Bickley, and you have a near perfect line-up. What's more, we are blessed with the Gabrieli Consort, who give stunning performance of the innumerable, and wonderful choral numbers, and the Gabrieli players, whose Orchestral playing is well-nigh faultless. Their Overture is a real delight, grand and yet light and buoyant at the same time, the following 2 movements will have you amazed at the agility of the string section. Sound quality is ideal, clear, well-balanced and full of interest. At times I wondered whether the overall pace of the piece wasn't too slow, and those of you used to Gardiner's recording of the same work (typically brisk)may well find this too, but the quality of singing and playing is so high, and the music so wonderful, that this cannot be seen to be of any disadvantage whatsoever.Read more ›

While the publisher's blurb tells us: "Leave it to Paul McCreesh to give us the complete score--and demonstrate that Handel's original structure makes plenty of sense" (and indeed other recordings appear to meddle with Handel's original sequence), it does seem a shame that McCreesh was unable trust Handel's judgement in the disposition of solo voices. Handel originally cast Solomon to be sung by a woman, the mezzo-soprano Caterina Galli. She was one of the great female singers then performing in London. However fine a counter tenor is cast here (and he is remarkable) he cannot convey the timbre and power of the female operatic voice that Handel required.

Superb music, immensly enjoyable! However, can somebody tell me why opera singers always accentuate the rrrrrr's. We do not speak like that do we? I find it rather distracting, also, I prefer female sopranos to contertenors...I think the 18 century castratos are better represented with sopranos dressed up as males...or am I simply alone in this view? As regards Handel....Beethoven got it right when he called Handel the master of masters.

According to the liner notes Solomon is partly a political work: it is about good government and what makes a good ruler. It is certainly a magnificent piece, full of joy and good things. And it repays many many repeated listenings.

McCreesh's performance is excellent I would say (I do not know any other versions to compare it with): full of zest and life. The singers are, of course, excellent and sing beautifully. The orchestra and choir are also very good indeed and the recording is first rate.

This record is a first recommendation in The Gramophone Guide but comes after Gardiner's in the Penguin Guide. Take your pick.

Unabashedly joyful throughout. Disc One is infused with some of Handel's most beautiful music as he weaves and caresses an almost otherworldly beauty from his singers and players. Love of God and the purity of love itself is explored in Handel's most exquisite detail. Disc Two follows with the heart of this Oratorio, the Judgement of Solomon, and the humane fruit of his wisdom. Disc Three focuses on the Arrival of the Queen of Sheba, the wonders she finds there, and the food she takes away for thought (like all good rulers!).

The singing is so fine, it could not be bettered. Particularly loved Andreas Scholl, a pure yet masculine Solomon, who weaves this generally undramatic and actually rather happy Oratorio together, along with the most beautiful choral singing you will ever encounter. I was wiping tears from my eyes from the sheer beauty of the chorus at times, and then was blown away by its grandeur and power. All the singers are fine, the tempi are wonderful and the period instruments purr like contented baroque cats.
