This disc, very well recorded in 2008, makes a very satisfying set of choral works plus some orchestral items. The musical values are high and this is a serious alternative to the Pinnock set which is sparser in sound and dramatically punchier with even more telling use of the trumpets, partly the result of the smaller scale of the vocal forces used. That set also features boy trebles rather than women sopranos and generally feels more of a 'period' style of performance and sound.
This performance is also of very high quality. Three of the four anthems are separated on the disc by the other items which are the opening Queen of Sheba, the fourth organ concerto and the overture to Jephtha. Each of these are well played with the organ concerto being notably less wayward than the strange performance included on the BBC Proms DVD. That disc is to be avoided as one of the anthems is included as a 'bonus' and is very badly recorded in both sound and vision. It may be that there was a technical problem that could not be fixed in a 'live' event such as the Proms. A shame but absolutely remedied by this altogether better disc.
I would suggest therefore that this CD deserves to be given serious consideration by those interested in purchasing the anthems especially. They should also consider the alternative Pinnock version. Collectors should perhaps consider purchasing both as the versions are complementary to each other rather than than being competitive.
