This is an excellent performance of these great works. Handel's Op.6 set are often thought to stand with the Brandenburg Concertos as the pinnacle of the Baroque Concerto Grosso, and it's certainly a defensible point of view. They are truly outstanding works, full of richness, imagination and sheer pleasure for the listener. There are many great interpretations already on disc, and this stands with the best of them in my view.
Manze and the Academy of Ancient Music bring a bright, fresh approach and put a spring in the step of the concertos, without losing any of the great sense of structure and solidity which is central to these works. This may not be to everyone's taste, but I love it - the music dances and glows with sheer delight in places and retains the right degree of weight and solemnity in others. It's an absolutely cracking set, and I recommend it wholeheartedly whether you're looking for a single recording of the Op.6 concertos to last you a lifetime, and even if you already have one or more that you love. You will find plenty of freshness and new insight here.
