This is a delightful recording of Handel's Ode for St Cecilia's Day. The soloists are fine, with Dame Felicity Lott in her prime. Particularly satisfying is her final Aria, with a ringing top 'A' (admittedly but perhaps necessarily preceded by a somwhat misplaced breath) introducing the final chorus. Anthony Rolfe Johnson copes admirably and very musically with the demands of the tenor solos, particularly in 'The Trumpet's Loud Clamour'. Trevor Pinnock elicits glorious playing from the English Concert, and although one or two of his tempi seem a little on the slow side, the overall effect is most pleasing. The sound is clear and the technical quality of the recording extremely high, and there are some lyrical delights in some of the less well-known numbers.
