Book Description

10 Sep 2003
Robert Beer offers a compact, concise reference work based on his previous publication "The Encyclopedia of Tibetan Symbols and Motifs". This handbook contains an extensive array of symbols and motifs, accompanied by succinct explanations. It provides treatment of the most essential Tibetan religious figures, themes, and motifs, both secular and religious. For artists, designers, and all with an interest in Buddhist and Tibetan art, this book features hundreds of the author's own line drawings, depicting landscapes, deities, animals, plants, gurus, mudras (ritual hand gestures), dragons, and other mythic creatures - ranging from complex mythological scenes to small simple ornaments. Robert Beer has studied and practised Tibetan thangka painting for over 30 years. Since the early 1990s, he has worked on an extensive series of iconographic drawings depicting the major deities, lineage holders, and symbols that occur in the spectrum of Tibetan art.

A very expansive book, covering vast swathes of Tibetan Buddhist imagery and symbolism. Detailed descriptions and clear images of the symbols and implements used in dharma practice are found throughout the book. My only critisism would be that there is no index, which can make it tricky if there is something specific you are looking for. However, the auther does mention this in the introduction, as he didn't have time to complete it. Overall, very good, especially if you find the visualisation tricky in practice or are unsure what certain things represent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Buddhist symbols in detail 14 Oct 2011

Very impressed with the hard work the author put into creating this book with decades of indepth research. I mainly bought it after having acquired a singing bowl and thanka in Nepal and wanted to know more about the symbols they contained. This book had them all! Plus indepth explanation of the meaning of each sympbol. Simple yet detailed symblos drawn by the author himself show the different ways each symbol can be depicted. Well worth bying if you want to learn more about Buddhist Symbols and Thankas.
