Book Description

Since the introduction of the European Working Time Directive, the daily practice of the junior doctor on-call has changed. Junior doctors are now expected to cover surgical specialties of which they have had no experience. Ironically this is at the times of day when there is no immediate senior help at hand, which has left many doctors feeling exposed. This is a concise text that gives junior doctors the guidance that they need to cope with on-call emergency problems for both common and severe surgical disease seen in the emergency department, as well as specific ward-based problems that may occur. The Handbook for Surgical Cross-Cover is an invaluable guide to cross-covering surgical specialties out-of-hours and appeals to a wide readership, all junior surgical doctors (those below consultant grade), medical doctors covering surgical acute admissions, members of the hospital-at-night teams and medical students interested in learning more about the practical management of patients.

Product Description

Several handbooks of surgery are available...but this one stands out... (British Journal of Surgery)

What I find most refreshing about this handbook is the logical progression through the management plan with the clear identification of the point that the senior on call should be contacted. there is also a nice symbol scheme to help the flustered foundation doctor triage the priority of the many calls they receive during their shift...It focuses on the common problems and will provide a valuable tool to any cross-covering doctor...The authors should be congratulated on yet another triumph in this excellent series. (The Surgeon, Vol 6, no.4)

5.0 out of 5 stars great book for surgical trainees oncall 22 Dec 2008
This is an essential pocket book on the modern surgical oncall shift for trainees cross covering specialities they may not necessarily have been instructed on or exposed to sufficiently to work confidently without much local senior guidance. Written in an easy to access and logical manner it covers all the important surgical specialities with exactly the right level of detail required to practice safely and effectively. Beyond the surgical trainee, I would highly recommend it to any doctor caring for the acute surgical patient - from primary care, ED and through to critical care.
