Book Description

25 Jun 1992 Pelham Practical Sports
The handbook of sailing provides a full-scale 'how to' course in all the essentials. Bob Bond, formerly training manager to the Royal Yachting Association and now principal of the Plas Menai National Water Sports Centre as compiled the work so that it can be used by anyone who thinks of taking up sailing, whether in earnest or just as casual means of weekend relaxation. It is also an invaluable source of reference for the more experienced sailor, who may need to improve and up-date his technique. The book provides essential information would-be sailors need to know from the moment they first set foot in a boat in shelteredwater to the time when they might be in mid-ocean in a force-eight gale.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "must have" reference book for every sailor 7 Jan 2001
This revised edition now has everything you could ever want to know about sailing, both big yachts and little dinghys. It covers from the very basics for the beginner to technical points for the more advanced sailor. It gives you everything from practical sailing to boat maintinance to knots to passage planning to buying a boat to a little of the history of boat design and weather prediction. All complete with clear color digrams and pictures.

One tip, you must order the edition for your country. There is a major difference between the US and UK version as they use different navigation and pilotage systems.

Above all it will enhance your fun of sailing and make you want to go out there and go sailing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - required reading 24 Feb 2004
This is a great book for beginners through to intermediates, with lots of information and advice on countless topics. It was my constant companion while I was teaching myself to sail and is still referred to from time to time. Although it isn't geared specifically towards basic RYA exams it's better and more useful than the ones that claim to be. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars More Complete than Others 12 Oct 2004
By A Customer
We did a side-by-side comparison of this book against "The Complete Day Skipper" - the supposedly-RYA approved book. This book came out as by far the more comprehensive, complete and informative of the two. In this book, for example, you get a couple of pages on flares. In Tom Cunliffe's book, you get a couple of paragraphs, which is not sufficient for what you are expected to know for Day Skipper.

It may not have "Day Skipper" in the title but it's by far the better book for those studying either the theory or practical courses at this level.
