The Handbook of Portable Appliance Testing is a practical work that gives sensible answers to the sort of questions faced by most people undertaking PAT testing. It is intended to be much easier to understand than the IEE Code of Practice. It strikes a balance between giving enough technical background where necessary, and easy to follow practical advice in implementing a PAT testing scheme. For example someone wanting to undertake PAT testing using a PASS/FAIL PAT Tester need only read through the Overview, Planning and Doing the Work sections to get started. If they come across any appliances that they are not quite sure how to test, then a quick look within the Test Examples section should provide an answer. For those wanting more technical information on how the tests are done and find out how to interpret the test results, the PAT Testing: Technical Information section should provide all the answers they are looking for. The Test Examples section contains many practical tips and hints regarding PAT Testing of a variety of appliances that are found in offices, homes, schools and factories. Many of these are based around questions either from delegates or calls to our technical support line. Useful reference information has been tucked away in the Appendix so as not to clutter the main body of the handbook. This includes a chapter on Basic Electrical Theory and a background to Electric Shock and the different techniques in place to protect users from it. This book is equally valuable to the newcomer to PAT Testing who intends to test in-house as well as the more experienced practitioner who plans to provide a PAT Testing service to other companies. It should also provide a source of useful information to those intending to take the City & Guilds 2377 examination.
About the Author
Seggy T Segaran is Managing Director of Tele-Products Ltd, a company he founded more than 20 years ago. He has designed and launched numerous test instruments, including a simple to use Portable Appliance Tester which revolutionised the industry when it was introduced in 2002. He has also produced all the course material for the half-day Demystifying Portable Appliance Testing course as well as the full-day PAT Testing In-Depth Workshop , both taught through First Stop Safety , a division of his company. The latter course is very popular with those wanting to set up a PAT testing business. Since 2003, thousands of delegates have had the benefit of both these courses. Seggy has a master s degree in Electronic Engineering from Cambridge University, and has over 30 years in the telecoms and electronic engineering industry. He is a mentor for the Prince s Trust, and the Chairman of Electronics Yorkshire. He lives in York with his wife Jane, and they have three children.

This is a bottom up approach to the subject. The book makes no assumptions about the reader's level of knowledge to start with. It seems to cover all the basics and gently introduces the reader to why and how PAT testing is performed as part of the health and safety requirements of a managed quality system.
Having said that, it is a surprisingly easy read. I had expected a text book on this subject to be hard going and perhaps rather tedious, but this is not the case. It is remarkably practical, with a common sense approach and a style that does not leave the reader floundering in technical jargon. The colourful layout and extensive use of example photographs and diagrams helps to make this handbook easy to use.
The text includes template documents for planning a test regime and recording results and provides a description of the procedures required to test the majority of applicable appliances that could be expected to be found in an office based workplace or domestic environment.
This is not a text book specifically for passing trade related exams on the subject but will undoubtedly provide an invaluable reference source. If you need to find out about PAT testing, what is required and how to go about doing it then this book should provide the answer.

This book provides a very straightforward explanation for a subject that often has a great deal of misunderstanding. I especially liked the way it is presented, without going in to great technical detail, providing a straightforward introduction. Detail is added later on which the reader can choose to refer to or not, depending on what their interest is in the topic.
I would recommend it to anyone interested in implementing PAT testing in their workplace, whether or not they are going to be undertaking testing themselves.
For someone carrying out the testing it would complement the necessary training and provides a valuable source of both practical and theoretical reference material.

An extremely helpful, well written book that gave me an immediate answer to my query. Having completed an approvred PAT Course at Bournemouth University, I have found it extremely helpful as an aid-memoire on all of the minor points that have arisen during subsequent tests.
I would recommend it to anyone both as an initial guide and also to use it for the same purpose as I do.

There are many PAT testing books available from quite cheap to very expensive.

Good book, only looses a star due to price.
