Plenty of advice, insights and useful models for those who lead learning and improvement efforts in organizations. Especially if you want to broaden the range of solutions beyond training and development, to include a much wider range of factors that impact on performance.

Around 1300 pages and 55 separate contributions from leading practioners, including making the transition from a learning/training and development function to a performance function.

The previous 1999 edition is also a good buy. The website of the International Society for Performance Improvement is worth a visit

In summary, contains many tips for improving the performance of individuals, groups and organizations.

5.0 out of 5 stars EARNS a place on YOUR desk...not the shelf! 23 May 2007
By The Least of These - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
As a trainer, Six Sigma Black Belt, Certified Performance Technologist, and Sr. manager for a leading BioTech firm whose job is to help my site adopt the tools, concepts and methods of HPT, Lean, Six Sigma, I use this reference all the time. Taking a "fieldbook" approach much like Peter Senge's FIFTH DISCIPLINE and DANCE OF CHANGE fieldbooks, the HANDBOOK FOR HUMAN PERFORMANCE TECHNOLOGY is THE "bible" in our field. Full of real world advice, insights, and helpful models and examples, don't miss your chance to have the best reference around in your toolkit.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "must have" reference for improving workplace performance!!! 7 Jan 2007
By Roger Chevalier - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Like its previous editions, the third edition of the Handbook of Human Performance Technology is a "must have" reference for all performance improvement professionals and those seeking to systematically and systemically identify and remove barriers to individual and organizational performance. Unlike many books on the subject that offer the views of an individual or small group of authors, the Handbook's fifty-five articles give the reader an opportunity to learn from the diverse experience of some of the best practitioners and academicians in the field.

4.0 out of 5 stars very thorough 13 April 2009
By R. Hemmer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
People who work in this field should find the chapters helpful. I like that many subjects are covered by experts in their particular areas. Each chapter covers a part of the spectrum and should be useful for people in human resources, performance improvement, training, and curriculum and instruction. I use it as a reference tool and often start here before going on to other sources to complete what I am looking for. I sometime read a chapter to gain a wider perspective on a subject I know little about. The contributors are well-known and most write in an acedemic style. The style m ight be off-putting to some who don't often read acedemic journals. Even so, the content is very user-friendly and organized well.
It is expensive so make sure you need it before you purchase.
