4.0 out of 5 stars Good - but annoying in parts 23 April 2001
By A Customer
This guy certainly knows his stuff. And the book will find a place on my bookshelf for the foreseeable future. I certainly learned a great deal from reading it (part of my job is to check exam papers). This is not a reference book. It is designed to be read cover-to-cover - and that's the way I tackled it. I did manage to read the whole thing which - I guess - is testiment to the title's readability. The bad points? It's American (I'm British), the author is a bit pompous (most people who write about grammar are), and the examples could have been much clearer and better selected. As a computer scientist the inconsistencies in English grammer drive me mad - but that's not the fault of the author.
So highly recommended. I learned a great deal about grammar, punctuation, and usage. Just be prepared to be annoyed by his preaching style and the illogicalities of English grammar.

5.0 out of 5 stars A helpful guide with answers to many a sticky wicket 19 Oct 2000
By anonymous - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As a copyeditor, I need not only to know the answers but also to back up the choices I make when editing a manuscript. In that regard I have found this book exceptionally helpful. The author was a copyeditor himself for many years, so he knows the kinds of difficulties I am likely to encounter, and he helps me make the best choice when I am on the horns of a grammatical or stylistic dilemma. I would recommend this book to anyone who cares deeply about writing well and using language to its best effect.

5.0 out of 5 stars The [BEST] Handbook of Good English 13 Oct 2005
By William O. Jenkins - Published on Amazon.com
As a professional advertising copywriter and English major, I have all the authoritative books on grammar, punctuation and usage, but "The Handbook of Good English" is my go-to source. (My major professor turned me on to it years ago; I just ordered a new copy to replace my original, which was borrowed and not returned.) Highly practical, eminently readable, easy to use and understand, and far more comprehensive than Strunk & White's "The Elements of Style," this is the one book everyone who writes for a living or just writes, period, should have it on their shelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazingly helpful!!! 13 Dec 2001
By Leandro Di Pasquale - Published on Amazon.com
Being a foreigner learner of English Language, I am delighted to find such a comprehensive material on good usage of English. It certainly pushed me onto a superior plateau of understanding, and opened my mind not only for strict grammar and rules but also for a different culture not quite my own. Clear in concepts and examples this book would greatly improve your own performance on using English (be it written or spoken). Congratulations Mr. Johnson!! Count me on among your fans.

By LF - Published on Amazon.com

I had this book in college and somehow misplaced it so I was eager to get another one for reference. It is a great book and even though we have the ability to look things up on the internet, this book is worthwhile to have. It was delivered quickly and in perfect condition. Thank you!
