Review

Praise for the First Edition:

`Only occasionally these days do books appear that are really needed in the area of counselling/counselling psychology. This is just such a text.... The editors are well chosen.... They know better than most the important issues, the changes that have taken place and the current position within the field. Between them, they have knowledge of most people working in the area, hence an excellent range of contributors.... This book gives an excellent description of the present state of counselling psychology... [it] is a must for all students of the subject and those working within the profession, as it is the only publication which brings together such a wealth of information pertinent to this fast changing field.... Already I have found this an invaluable text which I refer to again and again' - Psychology Teaching Review

`This book, without question, must be read by students, practitioners, alike. It is readable, insightful, authoritative, it accurately reflects the development and current status of the profession and is a much-welcomed resource' - Counselling Psychology Review

`A thorough, well researched and up-to-date source book.... The 28 chapters are well integrated and work well within a clear structure. They are of a consistently high quality and consistently well written... impressive' - British Psychological Society Division of Educational and Child Psychology Newsletter

`A landmark publication in the development of counselling psychology. It demonstrates an approach to counselling that is securely grounded in psychological theory and research, but which encompasses a broad range of practical applications and approaches' - Dr Fraser Watts, University of Cambridge

`A major contribution to the literature. This is an authoritative text and the first such comprehensive survey of the field by British authors.... The Handbook will have a national and international impact. It will be a constant source of reference for practitioners and academics well into the next millennium' - John Allen, City University

`A big, thoughtful, energetic, informative book. It lays out the groundwork for the new profession and discipline of counselling psychology as this is being developed in the UK, and gives a clear account of the main parameters of counselling psychology as it is presently understood. There are many excellent chapters and contributions from many of those who have been most influential in shaping and developing this new arena for psychological work' - Dr J Miller M Mair, Crichton Royal Hospital, Dumfries and Galloway

`The authors successfully integrate psychological knowledge of life-span development, counselling practice, the helping relationship, the enhancement of psychological well-being and the insights of scientist practitioners in order to clarify the distinctive contribution which counselling psychologists have to offer to the field of counselling and psychotherapy. It is an essential resource for practitioners' - Helen Cowie, Roehampton Institute University of Surrey

Product Description

`This Second Edition of the Handbook constitutes a comprehensive work which reflects the current status of counselling psychology and highlights developmental trends for the future. It is well structured and extremely informative and is therefore an essential source of reference that should be acquired by students and professional alike' - Stress and Health

`The Second Edition is a developmental step forward for counselling psychology, where the discipline's stance on what constitutes science, inquiry and the nature of evidence-based practice is clearly outlined. The versatility of the text is illustrated by theoretical perspectives on practice; the framework of the life-span appreciates the developmental view where distress is seen as a part of human experience as opposed to pathology. These features contribute to a counselling psychology text that is essential reading material' - Professor Pam James, Liverpool John Moores University

The Handbook of Counselling Psychology, Second Edition is the definitive guide to the context, theory and practice of contemporary counselling psychology. The Handbook is highly recommended by lecturers and trainees, while for practitioners it provides an excellent source of professional reference.

Bringing together the knowledge and experience of leading practitioners, the Handbook provides a uniquely comprehensive account of the major topics within counselling psychology, including:

- theoretical approaches

- methodology

- contexts of practice

- psychological interventions; and

- social, professional and ethical issues

Fully revised and updated, the Second Edition includes six new chapters covering; the transpersonal approach; gender issues; sexual identity; race and ethnicity; time-limited practice; and the body. This new edition is also supported by illustrative case material and examples throughout, which show how issues arise and are addressed in practice.

The Handbook of Counselling Psychology, Second Edition is an invaluable resource for all trainees, students, lecturers and practitioners working in counselling psychology, counselling, psychotherapy and other helping professions.

5.0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive reference book for counselling students, 28 May 2001
By A Customer
I found this book to be an invaluable tool in my learning. It has become the most well thumbed book on my bookcase. During my four years of training I have been introduced to many different aspects of counselling pyschology. Each time I hear of something new I rush to this book and look it up.I have used this book constantly as a gateway to further learning. It has given me the essence of many different approaches, and encouraged further study. I highly recommend this book to other students.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide for Trainee Counselling or Clinical Psychologists, 8 Oct 2008
This review is from: Handbook of Counselling Psychology (Paperback)
This book provides a wealth of information about the discipline of Counselling Psychology. I found it useful when thinking about what area of Psychology to focus on in post-grad and career development. The main sections are Research and Evaluation, with some interesting perspectives on qual and quan research; Different types of therapeutic practice, from psychodynamic to CBT, plus others; Theoretical underpinnings, such a life- span and age related counselling needs; How counselling psychology is applicable to various contexts, such as primary care and the workplace. There are also excellent chapters on the future of counselling psychology and ethical issues. Its a great start point and is well referenced, enabling follow-up study if required.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could have done better........., 14 April 2006

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Handbook of Counselling Psychology (Paperback)
Whilst the book did provide an overview of the psychological approaches to counselling and psychotherapy, and showed the salience of research in the development of the counselling psychologist, I felt that this book was a little too superficial, and looked at nothing in a great details. I would have preferred to have read something on what makes a good case study, how to write a good case study, or what is process report. All these things are vitally important to students, but this book contains none.
