Product Description

Product Description

This is a climbing handbook, encompassing the history of the sport, the equipment needed, acquisition of skills, rescue, winter and alpine climbing and hillwalking. It describes the principles and methods of movement on rock, snow and ice, and the correct use of equipment and forms of protection. In many cases a variety of relevant techniques are detailed to allow the reader to select the system appropiate to his individual needs. All the techniques of modern climbing are covered, from those required on road-side crags to those needed on the more ambitious ascents of major mountains and faces. The text is accompanied by photographs and drawings.

5.0 out of 5 stars The definative Bible for Mountaineers, 30 July 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Handbook of Climbing (Hardcover)
If there was ever a book to take with you on an expedition or to read before a mountaineering course this is it. This book has not been given the nick name of BIBLE by instructors like myself for nothing Hamish Macinnes has put toghether a first class book that can answer any question you might have about climbing be it ice, rock or how to navigate to the crag. I strongly beleave this book is a must for anyone who climbs

5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive climbing manual, 13 Mar 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Handbook of Climbing (Hardcover)
I learned all my mountaineering skills from this book. Whether you want to learn how to tie an alpine butterfly knot or how to perform a crevasse rescue with two krabs and a piece of sticky-back plastic (only kidding!), it's all in here. The depth and breadth of subject matter are both huge - if you have to use your hands to get up it, then there'll be full instructions (and diagrams) in here somewhere. A must-have for climbers, mountaineers, clubs and bluffers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for all mountain activists, 22 May 2000
This review is from: The Handbook of Climbing (Hardcover)
The Handbook of climbing is the undisputed " Bible " for all rock, snow and ice climbing and should be on every climbers bookshelf. As an active climbing and mountaineering instructor teaching others the skills of mountaineering I find myself constantly delving into the wisdom found in this book. I recommend this book to any newcomer to the sport, not to replace proper practical instruction, but to enhance the lessons learned.
