Product Description

Product Description

This is a practical handbook offering fully illustrated step-by-step guidelines to a wealth of elementary classroom art activities. Designed to provide a easy-to-use reference and resource manual for elementary teachers, A Handbook of Arts and Crafts gives teachers the background, context, and activities they need to successfully integrate the arts into their classroom.

From the Publisher

Discipline-Based Art Education: This approach - developed in the 1980's - has become a defining philosophy of arts education. The 10th edition recognizes the shift and has been revised accordingly - activities have been updated with the new standards in mind and new activities have been added that can easily be incorporated into a DBAE curriculum.
Computer Exercises: New activities in this edition include computers as another medium - like ceramics or paint - that teachers can employ in their classrooms.
Expanded History and Context: The completely revised first chapter introduces readers to art as a discipline with information on aesthetics, art history, and art criticism.
Art and Resource Appendix: This expanded and updated resource includes websites, films, videos, magazines, and supply vendors as well as over 100 book titles for more in-depth study.
Art History Timeline: Updated and expanded to include non-Western art, this invaluable reference helps teachers to place fine art examples within the context of their time and style.
The project-by-project organization, clear instructions, and concise lists of materials make this book a valuable resource for future teachers.
A glossary, detailed index, and art resources list are included to encourage understanding and further exploration.
An emphasis on safety reminds students to maintain a safe working environment when working through activities.

NOTHING LIKE IT ANYWHERE ELSE!! 5 July 2009
By Mark H - Published on Amazon.com
I have seen easily a hundred or more of these types of books and this one just blows me away. For me, I started school in the 1960's. There is so much in here that reminds me of the great things i learned and tried in art back in "the day". There are so many things in here to try that kids today have never even heard of or imagined doing. Sure, it has the old standby's like the salt and flour sculptures (remember, the ones you would taste with your tongue, at least I did !!) Although it says it is for Elementary and Junior High teachers, there are many techniques in here that could be used at much higher levels or art education or experience, you'd just do more or get more creative than the basics they show. I think that is the key thing. It shows SO MANY basics that can then be expanded on, limited only by the creativity of the student, that this one book could enable years of art education projects with no duplication. Even ways of using crayons that I had never heard of or realized!! This book is just 1005 GREAT FUN. Guaranteed that the projects in this book will challenge and enable young artists to really blossom and maximize their creative talent. I can't recommend it highly enough and it just blows away almost every recent book I have seen
