Product Description

Product Description

This is a first-of its-kind source that shows designers and others all the ins and outs of using adhesives and sealants successfully. This book gives full details on adhesive and sealant selection and use - with extensive data on how they perform in their end-use. It covers chemistry, material and surface science, and solid mechanics - key areas not commonly studies by designers. It describes standard and special test methods available.

From the Back Cover

This handbook will cover polymeric adhesives and sealants for joining or bonding a wide range of material including metals, plastics, composites, and elastomers. The book will include many real-life examples to illustrate the "do's and don'ts" of using adhesives and sealants. The goal is to develop this work so that it is an extensive yet easy review of the technology.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for the sealant formulator, 26 Feb 2004
By
L KELLY (WIGAN, GTR MANCS United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Handbook of Adhesives and Sealants (McGraw-Hill Handbooks) (Hardcover)
Ed provides what is probably the first comprehensive reference text for the sealant and adhesive formulator, a well written and interesting read this book is never on the shelf in our laboratory.
Chapter 3 provides a thorough understanding of joint design providing a reliable insight into adhesive forensics by explaining the basic and yet most effective analytical techniques leading to state of the art hi-tech methods of joint fatigue analysis.
This text is a must for the student chemist intersted in adhesives and sealents.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm stuck on it!, 11 Dec 2001
By Peter J. Kelly - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Handbook of Adhesives and Sealants (McGraw-Hill Handbooks) (Hardcover)
This book was everything I expected - comprehensive, accessible and well organised.
The book has some deep chemistry in it without being opaque. I am an inorganic chemist by training though haven't worked in the field for 15 years and I had absolutely no problems with it. This book is not for the general reader but I would suggest that any technical person who is not necessarily a chemist could get through it.
Remember - this is a handbook. As such it is designed to be a reference when faced with a problem like "What's the best glue for a metal to nylon bond?" I use it for amateur researce into glues and wood bonds. In that role, it is invaluable to me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great companion for the professional bonder, 11 Feb 2004
By M. Tillman - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Handbook of Adhesives and Sealants (McGraw-Hill Handbooks) (Hardcover)
As a professional in the adhesion industry, this book is a valuable desktop companion. I use it when I am asked a question that is far afield of my normal scope of business. It contains a broad base of information on how various materials can be used, what they can bond, and the strengths and properties one can expect. However, it lacks the depth to make it useful in anyone's field of expertise. That is often not a problem, and I would recommend it to any professional in the industry, as it will help with data and additional sources of information when they are trying to find answers that are outside the normal scope of their experience and daily tasks.

As an aside, I would recommend that anyone purchasing this volume keep a copy of MIL-HDBK-691B nearby, as it covers many of the same topics and can provide a quick second opinion in adhesive/bonding selection and methods.
