Peter Teal wrote this book to share his expertise in the ancient art of woolcombing and spinning in the worsted style. Although old fashioned and quirky you will find no better book than this on the subject. You can hear Mr Teal speaking right out of the pages. And you don't need to pay these ridiculous prices either. It has been reprinted, with an extra chapter summarising changes in the past 25 years, and is available from a number of sources (but strangely not from Amazon!) If you want to learn how to spin worsted yarn - buy this book.

Great book, available in water stones for £12.00. Not necessary to buy old copy for 3 times the price. Shop around.

HASH(0x8e8c8690) out of 5 stars hand wool combing & spinning by Peter Teal 22 Sept. 2009

This book was very helpful in learning about wool and how to correctly comb out wool and creat rovings. I did not know about planking and how important it was to combing but Peter Teal goes over this with pictures to give your a clear idea as to how its done. I do not spin, I am a felter, but found this book helpful in the process of getting your raw wool ready. I recommend this book not only to spinners but any one who wants to learn to comb wool.

This is an older book but it contains everything you neeed to know about processing wool at home. It's full of tips and expertise that's hard to find. I've been doing this a long time and I found many new ways and improved ways to do things. It's really excellent and the author spent alot of time thoroughly researching his information. Thank you Peter Teal!!
HASH(0x8e8c8b1c) out of 5 stars A must have for the worsted spinner 8 Dec. 2014

This is a "dense" sort of read. But if you want to spin worsted or semi-worsted, you need this book.

The author gives the reader a firm historical background of the English Hand Comb. I very much looked forward to this, having read his article in Spin-Off. (Okay I confess I am a bit of a history geek.)

I found the instruction easy to follow, but I am someone that easily learns from written text. So this book might not be a great choice for someone that learns best by either watching or doing.

He also explains the differences between 4 and 5 pitch combs, the most effective way to use them, etc.

I'd say this was an excellent in-depth resource for anyone interested in spinning hard-wearing wool for things such as socks.

I'm not very far in, but I'm impressed already. Complete detailed instructions for building your own wool combs, interesting techniques for blending color, encouraging words to perfectionist spinners... This book may as well have been titled, "Worsted Spinning With Long Wool". It's a must read for long wool enthusiasts.
HASH(0x8e1810a8) out of 5 stars it helped me a great deal and I would recommend it to all beginners 26 Jun. 2014

Although this book was published in 1985, there is a lot of information about fibers and how to clean, hand comb and prepare them for spinning. As a new spinner, it helped me a great deal and I would recommend it to all beginners.
