"'Superb' Cruising 'A delightful book' WoodenBoat"

Product Description

In Hand, Reef & Steer - winner of the Best Book of the Sea Award - Tom explains the different sailing characteristics of classic craft and shares his grasp of the special skills required to handle them. He describes how to handle heavy loads using tackles rather than winches and reveals the mysteries of making the boat work for you rather than fighting with her gear. He shares step by step advice on setting up the rig; sail handling skills (hoisting, setting and reefing) heavy and light air sailing; manouevring a long-keel boat; losing way, scandalizing and steering with sails, topsails, watersails, single-luff spinnakers and fisherman staysails; and much, much more. Hand, Reef & Steer, with its wonderful watercolour drawings and atmospheric photos, will delight all who love the unique character and grace of classic craft. 4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent exlpanation of traditional sailing methods., 14 Jan 2002
By btb@btinternet.com (Sandhurst, Berkshire, UK) - See all my reviews
This is the degree-level course in traditional sail handling which is both comprehensive and understandable. A hundred years ago, the master of every vessel would have understood this all instinctively. At that time, sailing boats had reached their peak of development. Many so-called improvements since have only served to isolate us from the effects of the wind and the weather, blunting our natural sailing skills. Tom Cunliffe explains clearly and concisely how the traditional rigs were handled, concentrating on Gaff rig, but adding examples from schooners and square-riggers. If you don't believe the relevance of all this today, just put an experienced dinghy sailor up against somebody who has only sailed a modern pocket-cruiser! The knowledge of traditional boat-handling skills imparted by Tom will confer the same advantage. You will understand why boats developed in the way they did, and even have an insight into where we are going down the wrong track today.

Also recommended, by the same author, is The Complete Yachtmaster, which is a comprehensive book on Seamanship for both the modern sailor and the ancient mariner!

5.0 out of 5 stars superb, 28 Jun 2008
By Tripod (Portsmouth, UK) - See all my reviews
being new to the dark art of sailing gaff rigs, this book helped explain all in a clear and logical way. it certainly helped us get a bit more speed out of the colin archer. also contains plenty of information for the more experienced. put simply, a great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best seamanship book for gaff-rigged craft., 2 Oct 1999
This review is from: Hand, Reef and Steer (Hardcover)
Tom Cunliffe is an experienced yachtsman and RYA examiner, in this book he shows the modern sailor the techniques for sailing traditional gaff-rigged boats. Tom debunks a few myths about gaffers and shows how gaff-rigged boats have some major advantages over modern Bermudan-rigs.

Tom covers the whole aspect of sailing, from sailplans and rigging, right down to why winches are not essential for handling sails.

If you've ever thought about buying a traditional boat, but have held back because of a lack of knowledge about handling it properly, then take heart and consult this book.

This book will give you the skills to sail safely and comfortably in all winds.
