Book Description

1 Oct 2007
In this digital age of computer-generated graphics and typography, it's refreshing to find typographers who still believe in working by hand. No longer relegated to designer's sketchbooks, hand-drawn type has emerged from the underground as a dynamic vehicle for visual communicationfrom magazine, book, and album covers to movie credits and NFL advertisements. As the practice and appreciation of hand-drawn type grows, its time to celebrate the work of those typographers whose every letterform is a work of art."Hand Job" collects groundbreaking work from fifty of today's most talented typographers who draw by hand. Graphic designer and hand typographer Michael Perry selects work representing the full spectrum of design methods and styles. Each hand-drawn work is entirely shaped by the artist's unique processevery one a carefully executed composition enhanced by unplanned "accidents" of line, color, and craft. "Hand Job" also includes photographs of found type, artists studios, and the tools that help make typography come to life. Whether you are looking to invigorate your design work or are just in need of a little offbeat inspiration, "Hand Job" will have you reaching for your favorite pen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and beautiful 16 Oct 2009
Format:Paperback
I bought this book as a gift for a friend of mine, who also studies design and I loved it so much, I bought myself one!

It is beautifully put together and a joy to read. Full of inspiration whether you want to create your own typography, look at creative illustration or appreciate fine design. There isn't a dull page in this book, so you'll never be bored.

The book is full off lots of different typographic designers such as-

Kindra Murphy, Holly Hopkinson, Luke Ramsey, Robin Cameron, Jeremy Dean and many more.

In the 256 pages, you are taken through an alphabetic, typographic journey.

Great price, inspirational and brilliant!
You wont regret it! Thanks for reading

5.0 out of 5 stars I love a Hand Job 3 Mar 2010
Format:Paperback
This is exactly the kind of graphic book I love. I don't know about everyone else, because I'm not a mind reader of any-kind, but I hate having to read through all the crap to get to the good stuff; the graphics. Hand Job cuts to the chase, through amazing graphics all produced, as the title suggests by hand. It gives you the name and a little snippet of info (website etc.) of each artist so you can explore more of their work elsewhere.

In to graphics? BUY.

I got this as a present a while ago and I must say that the title threw me a little.

The book is all about handmade typography. Its not so much about being a reference manual or a how to but is a great inspiration when thinking about typography in your work.

The book features many different artists and is wonderfully made with soo much attention to detail.

If your interested in finding out more about handmade typography or just looking for something to inspire you then this is a great choice of book.

Although at first, judging by its title,i thought this book was about something rather,um, naughty.. but my tutor insisted this book was the best for font inspiration and she was right, there are hundreds of amazingly colourful pictures of hand made fonts that really inspired me for my coursework :)
