When it comes to any type of trilogy, we normally wait until all three books are out.
Why? Because we read so many different types of genres, that if we have to wait an entire year to read the next book, we may forget key points of the previous. Just how we roll.
But after staring and hungering for a solid fantasy novel, after trying numerous ones that were either run-of-the-mill or just not that enthralling, we decided with Sehestedt's 2nd that we couldn't wait any longer. Trust me, that's very unusual for us.
But after reading the terrific 1st novel, we eagerly ate up this fantastic 2nd. Most 'middle novels' are not that good. Hand of the Hunter is not one of those! Only being the slightest shade of not being as good as the 1st, Hand of the Hunter is still, far and away, a major fantasy and storytelling success all its own. The gods and demons of these books are fresh, more natural seeming, kinda like Native American dark legend and lore. Think Clan of the Cave Bear, but with better writing, more fantastical fantasy-like men, monsters and animals.
Mark Sehestedt is brilliant at creating a fresh mythos the likes of what we haven't seen in fantasy in a long time. We love this more primitive, savage world he's created than the average fantasy novels. Instead of sprawling, gleaming castles and cities, Mark's stories are set more with the savagery of nature. The flora and fauna come brutally alive in his books. His pacing in his books are spot-on. We found it hard to put down.
The only bad thing about this book is that it left us with a major cliffhanger - and we have to wait an entire bloody year for its conclusion! (See, that's why we usually always wait until all three books are out!)
What also makes us sad is the fact that there is only one more book to go. The world and its environs that Sehestedt has created here could could on and on - and we really wished it would!
We can't talk highly enough about these two books. If you love fantasy with sweeping vistas and fantastical creatures, chock-full of action and adventure, (and even some great comedic lines thrown in for good measure!), then look no further. Book I and II of The Chosen of Nendawen will more than fill your fantasy escapism needs.
