5.0 out of 5 stars Vol 1- great start 26 Jan 2005
By Fisket VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback
I really enjoy Hana-Kimi, in more than one way. There's the loveable characters, the silliness, the cuteness, and the way the story manages to rise above the somewhat generic plotline of 'girl-dresses-as-boy-to-meet-boy-of-dreams'.
In the first volume, Ashiya enrolls in the all-boys' school her high-jump hero, Sano, goes to. While Sano figures out his new roommate's secret pretty quickly, he pretty much defies the generic reaction- instead of falling in love with her or confronting her with it, he just goes on treating her as if she's a guy, feeling too uncomfortable around her whenever he thinks of her as a girl.
Meanwhile, Nakatsu, one of Sano's friends and not the most perceptive person ever, finds himself growing attracted to Ashiya and freaks out, denying to himself constantly that he's gay as he glares at any and every other person who goes anywhere near Ashiya. His jealousy is really cute, and his reactions often make me laugh out loud.
You do get some of the typical storylines- the possessive ex; the over-enthusiasm to make everything perfect so everyone can be happy; the inevitable hints at future feelings that are, in the end, the reason we all keep reading series like this. But a pretty solid supporting cast, and a hero who manages to keep things on the ground without falling into the 'serious-without-a-cause' cliche, as well as the generous smatterings of humour, make this a really fun, enjoyable manga that never feels too ridiculous, or has situations that are too contrived.
The artwork is pretty and cute, if not quite to the standards of CLAMP or Angel Sanctuary, and the characters, to the manga-ka's credit, do grow as the series progresses. There's also the major bonus that this is really re-readable- I must've read the first volume at least five times by now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hooked Me in from the start 9 April 2007
Format:Paperback
A cute fun loving manga, it'll make you smile and make you laugh out loud..

Mizuki Ashiya a 15 year old girl in the states is completely taken by Izumi Sano, a popular high jumper in japan..

smittened with his good looks and inspired by him, she decides to do whatever it takes to meet him.. so she movs to japan to attened the same school as he does.. only thing is.. it's an all boys school!!

there she encounters some fascinating and interesting people.. gets herself into lots of pickles.. makes wonderful friends.. and rivals.

this book will make you want to turn the pages as quick as possible to find out what happens next, and at the same time want to read it slow enough to appreciate the wonderful artwork by the auther Hisaya Nakajo.

They Made a Taiwanese Drama out of this book.. not as good.. but it does have Wu Zun (yumm) and Jiro (yummy) from Farenheit and one of the members of S.H.E .. story was the same with a few funny additions here and there..

so far they have only printed up to vol 17 out of 24 in english.. they seem to come out every two months.. worth the wait every time.

i loved it.. hope you do too

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant!!!! 11 May 2004
By S. Yung
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I think everyone should read this manga series, its seriously the funniest one i've ever read and i've read quite a lot. Hana Kimi is about a girl Mizuki who in order to meet her idol the famous high jumper Sano Hizumi she cuts her hair dress as a boy and enrols her self into a boy's high school! and amazingly the person she gets to share a dorm with is the famous high jumper himself.
Its really a really great story line with loads of humour especially when one of the main character actually falls in love with our herorine but because shes dressed as a boy he thinks hes suddenly turned gay and beats himself over this fact! Its so funny!
The drawings are really good and the storyline even more so, go on, give this manga a chance to see for yourself just how good it is!!!!
