Hammerite Metal Paint can be applied directly onto rusty metal thanks to a formula that has been developed to be a primer, undercoat and topcoat in one. It gives a brilliant gloss finish that is smooth to touch whilst forming a barrier that not only seals out moisture and gives long lasting protection, both inside and out. I have used various types of Hammerite paint over the years and have come to trust it as a means of protecting exterior metalwork; it has always lasted longer than stated, much longer.
I bought some lovely, intricately styled candlesticks from a local blacksmith (with roses, leaves and rambling stems) and decided they would be ideal for use in the garden on summer evenings. I also knew that they would be prone to rust if I didn't protect them from the elements. I decided to use Hammerite but, knowing how long painting by hand had taken on a garden gate a few years ago, knew the intricate design would take an absolute age to protect. I therefore decided to try out the aerosol - fantastic!
I was lucky that, other than dirt from the forge, the candlesticks were in good order without any rust. I did follow the recommendations to do a test patch to check for any adverse reactions, but this went smoothly; then it was just a matter of protecting the spraying surface (by placing cardboard on the lawn) before commencing spraying.
Whilst I had to spray each coat twice, inverting the candlestick between spraying to protect top and bottom, I was very pleased with how quickly each coat was applied. Something that would have taken hours to coat with a brush was completed in probably about ten minutes or less - and to a very satisfactory standard. I applied three coats to each candlestick (effectively six applications to each, if you count spraying upright/inverted) to ensure a good level of protection and the finished article looked really good.
The candlesticks have lived outside for 20 months now without any protection from the elements and there has been no deterioration to the finish (even with long periods of very cold weather and lots of snow).
For an intricate job, I don't think you can beat Hammerite in an aerosol as application is definitely much faster. But you do have to bear in mind over-spray and ensure surrounding surfaces are adequately protected; I thought I had done so but still ended up with an area of lawn that was much darker green for a while (with a clearly defined square in the middle).... Still, that was my fault and hopefully you won't have the same problem as I did!

I needed to re-spray my motorcycle stand and other various small things.
Previous sprays did not last long but this Hammerite is both tough and easy to spray, giving a good long lasting finish. I can recommend this product.
