Intelligent science fiction.,
This review is from: Hammered (Mass Market Paperback)
For those open-minded enough to enjoy possibilities over optimistic political dogma, Hammered sketches an unsettling vision of the future as a background to a story of dangerous drugs, cybernetic implants, alien spacecraft, and an artificial intelligence that's neither sweetly helpful nor murderously insane.Yes, there's a smattering of French. But the complaints seem rather silly since much of what's important is translated and what isn't might well be better left to the imagination: obscenities sound so much sexier with a French accent. What matters is that the story grabbed my attention, kept me reading with great enjoyment right to the end, and that there were genuine surprises along the way (Ms Bear is not afraid to kill people). It's an excellent read and I'm very glad that the second book in the series is already available and the third will be so shortly.

In the year 2062 Governments are still up to no good...,
By M. R. N. Shackelford "mark shackelford" (Worthing, UK) - See all my reviews (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Hammered (Mass Market Paperback)
The story tells of a disturbing future, when the US has become a lawless desert and civilisation (or perhaps not so civil) lurks in Canada (and possibly the Far East).
An elderly (50ish) heroine has been partially rebuilt as a cyborg (after an unfortunate accident with a helicopter and a shotgun) but with all the aches and pains of old(ish) age, and gets involved with a sinister Government agency, trying to outdo the Chinese to build a starship. Elements of sci-fi (Alien technology) merge easily with tales of a world of gangsters, crumbling society and the occasional love affair. Oh, and Clarke's famous space elevators get a look in... very popular in sci-fi these days. Lots of fun - lots of blood and gore - and an Artifical Intelligence who (I think) embodies the late, great Richard Feynman's brain and soul... What more could you want? Oh yes, a gangster who has had his teeth replaced by razor blades... Of course! Highly recommended (like all Elizabeth Bear's books).

This review is from: Hammered (Mass Market Paperback)
Elizabeth Bear has written a really nice little series of books here... She manages to create characters that are believable, a bit damaged, but that you cant help but like. And shes not afraid to kill the odd one off if the story requires :-)
You wont be disappointed in any of the books in the series.
