DVD Description

This DVD Box Set contains: Countess Dracula, Twins Of Evil and Vampire Circus.

Synopsis

This collection includes three Hammer vampire films: COUNTESS DRACULA, TWINS OF EVIL, and VAMPIRE CIRCUS.
COUNTESS DRACULA: In this medieval horror film, Ingrid Pitt stars as the title character, an aging aristocrat who makes herself younger by washing in the blood of young women. Needless to say, this behavior is not tolerated by the locals...
TWINS OF EVIL: Stunning identical siblings (Mary and Madeleine Collinson), one good and the other decidedly evil, are the main characters in this unusual gothic horror film. One of the young women is a vampire, and the other is the nice girl next door. Peter Cushing stars as their zealous vampire-hunting uncle.
VAMPIRE CIRCUS: A troupe of circus performers travels from town to town, providing residents with thrills and--especially--chills. For, you see, these performers are really bloodsucking vampires. And if you think the bearded lady is scary, just wait till you get a look at the vampiric sheep!

5.0 out of 5 stars At Last, our very own Hammer Horror on DVD!!, 26 Oct 2002
By A Customer
At last, three of my favourite quintessential late Hammer Horror films from the early Seventies on DVD! Countess Dracula, Twins of Evil and Vampire Circus all in one great collection!!!

I grew up watching re-run after re-run of these movies through the late 70's and early 80's as an adolescent with an active imagination. Hammer films always satisfied my need for a uniquely "original" and "stylish" aproach to the Horror genre. A "Hammer movie" is always recognisable as a "Hammer movie", but what makes them so unique? For me, Hammer movies represent the sum total of several key elements....
From the low-budget familiarity of the Bray Studio sets (economically and inventively re-designed for each new production) to the forest locations of Black Park, to the outlandish blood red colour of the Eastman film stock, to the immaculate gothic-style production values, to the great casting of Cushing and Lee and a staple of other well known Brits, to the evocative and stylish scores of James Bernard, Harry Robinson, David Whitaker and other great composers, to the "Hammer Glamour" and buxom delights of a bevvy of beautiful vampire women who could snarl with conviction, to the purely justified and in no way exploitative nudity of the latter, to the perplexing phenomenon of Cockney people popping up in the heart of Transylvania, to the continual emergence of regular Michael Ripper amongst those said cockneys and finally to the wonderful "atmosphere" and "style" conjured up by this talented ensemble of what is essentially, a National Treasure...as well as a phenomenon.

Sure, these films probably seem dated to a jaded modern audience, sure the dialogue may at times seem corny and the horror element pretty tame by todays grisly standards, but for those of us who caught these movies the first time round who keep returning to them for repeated viewings, we know what an indelible effect Hammer Horror films have had on us over the years. For me, they have been a great source of imagination and inspiration toward the world of the fantastical and supernatural.

In a modern film world preoccupied with the grisly and gory horrors of the "real-life" Serial Killer genre etc, the fantastic world of Hammer Horror with its supernatural characters of Vampires, Mummies and Werewolves is a welcome change!!

4.0 out of 5 stars VAMPIRE LUST, 21 Oct 2002
What can one say 3 great or I would say the Greatest Hammer films of all times in one collection.Countess Dracula tells a countess who used to bath in the blood of young virgins.Ok it gets to much over the top making it fictional than fact of the real Countess, but still a great film. The second film Twins of evil tells of twins one who is pure and after seeing her uncle whats the point of being good unlike her sister who is willing to sell herself to the Dark side for the pleasure of sex etc.Great film.
Ok now for the best of the three.VAMPIRE CIRCUS,A cousin of a late Count trys to get the count back to life by killing the kids whos parents took the counts life.It is a great mix of erotic, action and bloody gore.Great film and to me the Best in the history of Hammer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bargain of the year, 18 Oct 2002
By J. R. Cook "jamiec46" (Chelmford, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This collection of Hammer vampire movies must surely be the bargain of the year. All three movies are presented in 16:9 anamorphic widescreen,The only exception to this is the trailer for Vampire Circus. I can't recall these films ever looking so good, You can actually see what's going on in the night scenes. The sound on all three movies match the high standard set by the video transfers.

Countess Dracula is a fine film featuring some great performances from Graham Greene, Louis Jordan (who would later go on to star as The Count in the BBC's production a few years later) and Ingrid Pitt. It's just a shame that Hammer saw fit to dub Ingrid's voice by another actress, This seems to have been quite a common practice at that time.

Vampire Circus is another fine movie from the Hammer stable featuring a novel twist to the usual vampire story. It's also interesting to see an early performance by future Dr.Who star Lalla Ward.

Twins Of Evil is a really great movie. This features an excellent cast including Peter Cushing, The Collinson twins and cult film favourite, David Warbeck (Fresh from his stint in Gerry Anderson's series UFO). It's interesting how Cushing's puritanical Uncle and his "Brotherhood" are shown to be almost as bad as Count Karnstein, charging through the countryside burning everyone who they disapprove of.

I would urge anyone be they a horror fan or just a fan of films in general to snap up this film before sundown, You won't be sorry.
