Product Description

Product Description

A highly illustrated and exhaustively researched book, 'The Hamlyn History of Philosophy' decodes the baffling world of philosophy. It explains the essence of every major school of thought from the Ancient Greeks to the Postmodernists and the thinking of all the great philosophers from Socrates to Jacques Derrida. All the key movements in philosophy are covered and there are biographies of the lives and works of more than 50 key thinkers. The 'Hamlyn History of Philosophy' provides a lively and colourful account of this often confusing subject.

About the Author

Martyn Oliver is the chair of the Political Philosophy group at the Centre for the Study of Democracy in London. He also lectures in Political Science and Philosophy. He has written a number of academic journals and periodicals.

...I feel Martyn Oliver provided a fair assessment of N. in History of Philosophy, which is why I bought it in the first place. I recommend History of Philosophy as a fun reference guide for the layperson to further his or her interests or for someone who has a beginning interest in philosophy and doesn't know where to start or what philosophies might interest him/her.

Other recommendations: Will Durant's The Story of Philosophy, T.Z. Lavine's From Socrates to Sartre, Hilary Lawson's Reflexivity, Albert Camus' The Rebel.
