Most people who say they like Italian food and sometimes cook it would probably never have made their own pasta, which is really not that difficult for the simpler shapes but the more complex require skill and a lot of practice, or their own pizza (not with a pre-made base) which also need not be that complex. I have made both, often. Some may make a Bolognese sauce but most will probably start with something that is semi-prepared and just add the meat. Unless you start with the most basic of ingredients and prepare the dish from scratch, you are not cooking Italian. If you really want to learn to cook Italian, this is a good place to start.

All the above are included and many more. Many of the recipes can be considered as 'classics', and as with all the other Hamlyn cookery books in this series, almost every recipe has a variation which may involve substituting one or more ingredients with others. You may prefer the variant option to the main, but it is your choice. All the recipes have an individual accompanying photo.

The series is relatively inexpensive if purchased individually. I have a few and shall add this when I next order books; I had seen it on display at full retail price (which is not much higher than asked here). Each book stands alone and the author of this is responsible for at least two others in the series; most of the other authors have contributed at least two. The books are simply written and the recipes can vary from the very basic to the slightly demanding, but none should be beyond the capabilities of anyone with moderate cooking experience. Each book explains some possibly unfamiliar terminology and is fully indexed.

The only real criticism I have is that the binding does not allow the book to stay open on a page during use, but that is not only true of the complete series but of many more selling at much higher prices. At the price, even the full price, it would be nit-picking to expect more.

It may not be the best or most comprehensive book on Italian ccoking or bear the name of a famous or glamorous chef on the cover but you will almost certainly not find better at the price. Very good value, a varied mix of recipes and some familiar and perhaps not-so-familiar dishes. Buy it, you will probably like it!
