I bought this for myself and for someone who wasn't a cook at all. This book has been used again and again by both of us.
Recipes I've tried which have been a resounding success include the beef and aubergine chilli, mixed bean kedgeree (so delicious that even eating it 4 days running I'm not bored with it), sausage and bean casserole (the idea for which I also used to use up roast leftovers to make 4 more meals!), bacon, leek and tomato rice and the mexican pie. I have 6 books from the Hamlyn 200 recipe series and this is the one I've used the most often and gone back and repeated recipes. There aren't 200 pages of recipes. The 200 refers to variations and recipes for suggested accompaniments (as with all of the series) but it is still absolutely worthwhile getting. Suggested variations are significantly different to each other e.g pork and pepper chilli vs beef and aubergine chilli. All recipes are easy to do which is why the person who I gifted this book has done about 5 or 6 of the recipes having never done much cooking in the past. A must-have in these times of rising prices and busy lives!

Two hundred tasty budget meals in a handy compact book. Great for both beginners and more experienced cooks. I love the wipe clean cover because I am a messy cook! A brilliant range of cheap recipes from starters & snacks to desserts. The sort of cook book where you already have most of the ingredients in the house. All the recipes I have tried so far have been delicious. Favourites in this house are the Pasta Pie and Rice Noodle with Lemon Chicken.

A new favourite 10 Feb 2012
Format:Paperback
Hamlyn's "200 Budget Meals" has fast become a favourite in our house. It is beautifully illustrated, with every single picture eliciting a drooly "oooh, must try that" response. As an additional benefit, most of the recipes clock in at less than half an hour, making the book a good, reliable source for quick, last-minute meals. We especially loved the mushroom and leek pies. As a great fan of pies, I used to get frustrated at not being able to achieve the right consistency for the filling. This, however, turned out absolutely perfect (though I did substitute cornflour for plain flour -- it just made more sense). I'm making the pasta with aubergines and pine nuts tonight, and I have high hopes for it.

Update: It was my husband who made the pasta dish in the end. He was a little nervous, having never cooked with aubergines before, but the clear directions helped him create a deliciously moreish plate of pasta. Two thumbs up!
