Many Scottish children's books are, in my opinion, either too international in flavour or too Scottish in that they may not be accessible to children south of the border (or in other English-speaking countries). Linda Strachan cleverly avoids these extremes by the device of including Rupert, a hedgehog from Kent, in her wee cast of characters, all of whom are cleverly drawn (pun intended, as the illustrations are colourful and engaging). Whenever a Scottish expression is used (occasionally) it has to be explained to Rupert. For good measure, there's also a glossary at the back of the book.

The adventure has a good dose of suspense in it, and there's a nice little twist at the end of the tale. All in all, it's a very pleasant way for children to learn about Scottish geography, language and the value of friendship. As an uncle, I highly recommend this book.

the real Nessie! 23 Oct 2010
Format:Paperback
My class of five year olds loved this book and the others in the Hamish McHaggis series. There is just the right amount of adventure and suspense to hold their attention, they were particularly taken with the 'spooky cave' that Nessie lives in. The ending is deliciously ambiguous for adult readers but there's a bunch of five year olds in central Scotland who truly believe Nessie exists and has a penchant for Caribbean holidays!
