Super Sensitive Mic 2 Nov 2006
By Steven
I didn't realise that this is a zoom microphone (as it's not mentioned in the product title or the description specs - Amazon go to the trouble of stating on their RMZ-12 mic that that's a zoom mic, but not on the RMZ-14 .... I guess the "Z" means zoom ...), but I suppose I should have done a bit more research first before buying!

Being a zoom microphone it is super sensitive and picks up a faint whisper on the low setting from about a meter away. On the high setting the mic picked up it's own sound from my headphones on my ears and started a big feedback loop ... so it is extremely sensitive!!

There is a general hiss (which I get no matter what mic I use on my Sony PC103 camcorder) but this can normally be removed with suitable audio software (eg Sony Soundforge).

I can't use this mic as a general purpose mic on my camcorder because of the sensitivity (it picks up every movement of my hand as a loud clunk), but I reckon on a tripod it might be a lot better. If you need to pick up very faint or distant sounds (like birdwatchers I guess) then this mic will be very handy.

By the way, the foam wind shield that comes with it seems to be quite effective (better that I thought it would be) and with a proper "Windjammer" over it it would be even better.

I'm going to buy one of the "Hama 46102 Stereo Directional Microphone RMV-02" mics also from Amazon to see if that's not as sensitive.

I have had very good sound quality for many years from a "Sony ECM-MSD1 Stereo Microphone for Cold Accessory Shoe" also from Amazon and that mic's sound is greatly improved with a windjammer (Rycote mini windjammer available from www.canford.co.uk, part no 92-843; they also supply a Rycote "gustbuster", part no 92-857, which is a fluffy pad that fits over the flat mic on top of your camcorder, but I prefer the mini windjammer). I've fitted a relatively thin sponge windshield to the Sony ECM-MSD1 (similar to the pic on Amazon of the HAMA RMV-02 mic) and then put the mini windjammer over it and it really helps a lot when you're trying to film in gusty winds. If you don't have a windjammer then get one!

I can really recommend the Sony mic above with the mini windjammer, but it does pick up motor sound from the camcorder which the HAMA RV-14 doesn't seem to do, maybe because the mic is much longer so I'm hoping the HAMA RMV-02 will give me the best of both! I'll write a review on the RMV-02 in a week or two once I get it.

Hope this helps!!

I have very recently purchased this item. I found putting the battery into th Mic. a little bit fiddly. (Battery not supplied).

The Mic. fitted on to my Canon HG10 Camcorder OK. I set up some tests indoors, with the TV on and a pedestal fan about 12-18" away from the Mic. On low fan speed I could hear a dull rubble of sound coming from the fan.. This increased to a loud rubble on the high speed fan setting. The sound quality is adequate for my purposes.

There is an off switch with Low & High settings, the sound I recored I have to use the "low" setting.

It appears that this product is good value for money and if you are not particular about very high quality sound. I would recommend it.

I bought this microphone to partner my Panasonic SD900 camera, and was very disappointed to find that (for me) it is completely unusable except in specific static shots where I fix the focus and zoom to manual, because the microphone sensor has little or no acoustic isolation from the microphone case. Since the latter is tightly mechanically coupled to the case of the camera via the cold shoe adaptor, the recorded sound includes every little burst of mechanical vibration from the zoom and focus servos as a whirring sound. For this reason I haven't done extensive testing, but the frequency response, self-noise and wind-shielding all seem middle of the road and thus fair value for money.

It makes you realise how good the engineering of most cameras' internal microphones are. Those on the SD900 seem adequately isolated and don't pick up any servo motor noise at all. But they are terrible in windy situations - so you can't win!
