Product Description

Product Description

The Hama Ball and Socket Head 50mm is a super little ball and socket head that adds versatility to any photographer’s outfit. Designed to fit onto a tripod or stand without an adjustable head, this device allows the photographer to adjust the camera for correct alignment and perfect composition for that once in a lifetime shot.

Adjustment is simply by loosening the locking knob on the side of the base, adjusting the camera or flash gun position and then re-tightening. It can be fitted to amateur and professional tripods and stands alike with its 6.4mm/1/4” threaded camera platform.

At only 38mm high, 30mm wide and weighing in at only 36g, this little ball and socket head is capable of holding most of the lighter weight DSLRs with short – medium range zoom lenses, as well as accessory motor drives attached. It can also be used to mount flashguns in studio situations on tripods or stands to allow correct position of the light path as well as in close-up photography to allow fine adjustment of camera or flash guns.

Hama Ball & Socket Head 38mm
I have to admit I took a risk with this product and on receipt I realised that I should have purchased the next size up.
If you have a small camera, this is just the ticket! However, I wanted it for a SLR Zoom and I found that it would not support the weight at an angle. So, if you want a tilting devise for a small camera, this is great, but if you have an SLR Zoom, get the bigger unit.

This is a little gem of a ball and socket. Having read all the reviews and comments etc I decided to purchase although I was warned that it was strictly for 'small' cameras. I wanted to support a Panasonic TM700 (medium sized video camera but quite heavy) and wasn't sure whether it would support it OK. Well, it does . . . just. However, I think this is largely as the camera support bush is pretty central and therefore the camera is well balanced when horizontal. If I try to use it with the camera tilted at more than around 30 degrees - it fails. So - if you want to support a small compact or Sony Bloggie etc - then I heartily recommend this gadget. It's well engineered, positive in operation and looks good. Don't try and support an SLR or a medium sized video camera - unless the camera is well balanced and you want to use it in the horizontal mode. I've given the product 5 stars as it deserves it - for the price, quality and its design use with small cameras.

I bought a couple of these heads for mounting flashguns off camera. Having just tried them out I am really very happy with them indeed. They are well made and the clamp is positive and locks the ball very positively. (They have a built in swivel underneath into which the tripod screws - the twist knob locks this and the ball at the same time).

A tip here too. I'd also bought a couple of mini flexible tripods on Amazon (just search for them - Neewer or Hama come up as the brand names) these are very cheap but work very well and match up with this ball head almost perfectly.

But... do be careful. This does have it's limits. The ball head is very small (i.e. neat) and I'd never even consider using with a DSLR (look for a head with a ball of at least 35mm dia from a reputable maker - this one is probably only 10mm max). I have tried with a Canon G7 compact - that's a pretty chunky compact and it works fine on a table but I'd say that size is the limit for this head.

This product is well made and suitable for the 'Smaller and Lighter' attachment items. The locking mechanism is positive and reliable in all positions. For 'Larger and Heavier' items, I would recommend the 50mm version. I bought both for greater flexibility.

So, you've bought your Gorillapod (Joby Gorillapod - SLR or Joby Gorillapod SLR Zoom) and it hangs in all sorts of unusual angles to allow you to take pictures from where you want, however, it can be really difficult making all of this happen and still getting the camera level.

This solidly built accessory is the answer to two problems that you have...

The first problem that this solves is making the camera level, just loosen off the screw on the side and the camera can be tilted or panned to get the angle just right. A slight tighten and it is locked firmly in position.

The second problem that I have (and you might have as well) is the process of attaching and unscrewing the Gorillapod from the camera and (in the case of the SLR zoom version) finding a coin to use as a screwdriver to tighten it up. Well, you can leave this item permanently attached to your Gorillapod and it is then dead easy to attached or remove to your camera.

A very good investment that you won't regret buying. Fully worth the 5 stars!

Works well for a compact size camera, but unsuitable for anything bigger.
Added a pice of inner tube (8mm dia) under the ball to add a bit more "friction".
Well impressed with how light it is.
