Buying a soundtrack is always a little problematic. A good film soundtrack is not always easy to listen to when taken away from the film. It may be perfectly evocative of the movie, allowing one who has seen it to replay moments in their head, but as music the soundtrack can fail to engage.
This is certainly true of sections of the Halo soundtrack. While the suites are undoubtedly good music, there are sections that require the listener to have played the game for them to mean much of anything. Many of the tracks are very short, feeling almost like samples, but that is the nature of this beast.
The original soundtrack to the game was dynamic - it adapted itself to the way the player worked the game. As the sleeve notes say, there may be pieces of music in the soundtrack that players simply don't recognise from the game, as they never did find a particular room, or deal with an enemy in a particular way.
There are a few tracks that have historical as well as aural interest. The suites were written to accompany demos of the game at trade shows and the like, and encompass much of what players will remember from different segments of the game. That is fine by this reviewer - the suites are by far the most impressive sections of the soundtrack.
It cannot be denied that the soundtrack to Halo will be most appreciated by those who have played the game. The thrill you will get when you hear the punch of 'Rock Anthem for Saving the World', wonderfully OTT and deliberately tacky though it may be. The memories of riding a Ghost that will overwhelm you when listening to 'On A Pale Horse'. The skin-crawling feeling of the Flood advance in 'Library Suite' that will bring back the seat-of-the-damp-pants journey with the Monitor.
Those who haven't played Halo but who do appreciate good mood music will find a lot to appeal to them in this soundtrack, but not as much. It's great music to work to, particularly if your of a creative bent.
Highly recommended stuff this, and one more reason to look forward to Halo 2 arriving in 2004.
