From the moment I heard the Bungie intro on the first track, I knoiw that this was a good purchase.
This CD takes you on a wild journy through the depths of Halo, showing the listener its lighter and more sinnister sides.
People who have played the game will instantly recognise the songs from their many encounters with the Covenant hords, reliving the fight to the surface of silent cartographer (Rock anthem for Saving the world) and when you find the first group of marines that were ambushed by The Flood (Lament for Pvt. Jenkins).
Don't expect every track to be music, some are atmospheric tracks that were ment to set the mood of the area (but there are only a couple of these!) but even these are amazing. Giving the listener a sense of the scale of Halo and where they are on it.
Even if you have not played the game I advise you to buy this CD as the songs are just as good on their own.
The CD also contains the music from the Gamestock preview and an extra hidden track. (I don't know where it fitted into the game, if it did at all. Maybe I missed it ^_^;)

Halo - The Soundtrack 19 April 2003
Format:Audio CD
The essence of a good soundtrack is that it enhances the enjoyment of whatever film, show or even game that the viewer or player is experiencing without intruding unnecessarily. Anyone who has ever played the extraordinary game Halo will confirm that its soundtrack is very effective.

Buying a soundtrack is always a little problematic. A good film soundtrack is not always easy to listen to when taken away from the film. It may be perfectly evocative of the movie, allowing one who has seen it to replay moments in their head, but as music the soundtrack can fail to engage.

This is certainly true of sections of the Halo soundtrack. While the suites are undoubtedly good music, there are sections that require the listener to have played the game for them to mean much of anything. Many of the tracks are very short, feeling almost like samples, but that is the nature of this beast.

The original soundtrack to the game was dynamic - it adapted itself to the way the player worked the game. As the sleeve notes say, there may be pieces of music in the soundtrack that players simply don't recognise from the game, as they never did find a particular room, or deal with an enemy in a particular way.

There are a few tracks that have historical as well as aural interest. The suites were written to accompany demos of the game at trade shows and the like, and encompass much of what players will remember from different segments of the game. That is fine by this reviewer - the suites are by far the most impressive sections of the soundtrack.

It cannot be denied that the soundtrack to Halo will be most appreciated by those who have played the game. The thrill you will get when you hear the punch of 'Rock Anthem for Saving the World', wonderfully OTT and deliberately tacky though it may be. The memories of riding a Ghost that will overwhelm you when listening to 'On A Pale Horse'. The skin-crawling feeling of the Flood advance in 'Library Suite' that will bring back the seat-of-the-damp-pants journey with the Monitor.

Those who haven't played Halo but who do appreciate good mood music will find a lot to appeal to them in this soundtrack, but not as much. It's great music to work to, particularly if your of a creative bent.

Highly recommended stuff this, and one more reason to look forward to Halo 2 arriving in 2004.

A lot of people try to grind the X-Box into the dust, but if you haven't played Halo and you're bashing the X-Box, in my book you don't have a good enough reason to justify an argument.
Put simply, this soundtrack is amazing. Even if your eyes and mind have never graced Halo, this is worth buying, I assure you.
Some of the tracks are fairly repetitive and quiet, but that's simply because they're supposed to be atmospheric music instead of the kind of in-your-face music that film soundtracks carry.
Some of the songs are remixed from promotions (such as the demos at E3) so if you have played the game you won't recognise everything, which makes for a fresh approach instead of the stale soundtracks that sometimes come from games and films . In any case, it's a rare and modern treat for the ears and is well worth your heard earned money!
