Amazon.co.uk Review

It already dominates the world of gaming, and so it was perhaps inevitable that the Halo franchise would one day launch an assault on other media. And while talk of a full Halo movie remains tempered, there’s nonetheless this series of seven animated tales in the shape of Halo Legends.

The seven stories are all set against the backdrop of the Halo universe, and range in length from 10 to 20 minutes. Each was commissioned from a renowned maker of Anime, and the collection does vary quite a lot in style as a result. That’s not a bad thing, though, as while the quality is also a little inconsistent, you’re never very far from something really quite interesting.

The films that form Halo Legends originally debuted on the Xbox Live video service, but they appear to have found a more natural home on disc. They weave themselves with some style into the background narrative of the games, and while they’re clearly aimed more at the hardened, enthusiast game, even the casual viewer may find themselves pleasantly surprised. Something a little different, and all the better for it… --Jon Foster

If you've logged more hours playing Halo on Xbox Live than you have down the pub; if you bought Halo Wars and actually played it to the end; if you know your Rooster Teeth from your This Spartan Life, then why are you reading this review anyway, as you've probably seen most of these short Manga films on Halo Waypoint?

For the rest of you, this may need some explaining. You may have clicked onto this without realising it's a DVD not a game. The basic history is that Microsoft set up a company called 343 Industries to manage and promote the Halo brand. 343 commissioned seven short films from top anime studios, and the resulting short films were premiered on Xbox Live (via the Halo Waypoint add-on) in a one-day window. Each film ranges in length from around 10 to 20 minutes.

Although the stories are described as being canon (with the exception of one film, which is a parody), they often explore areas of the Halo universe and mythology outside the storylines of the games, though there are also many encounters with characters you'll recognise. The style of animation may sometimes seem at odds to some people with the western influences of the game, but for the most part that works well and gives a new take on it. Sometimes it doesn't work at all - for example, The Duel is basically Elites turned into Samurai, and although it is the first time we see female Elites they are more human in feature than Elite and extremely subservient. But the good thing about this compilation is that there may well be episodes you hate, but there are bound to be ones that you love.

It's not an essential purchase, unless you're a serious fan of the game, but it comes recommended as something you may be glad you took a chance on.

Halo Legends is a collection of animations centred around the Halo universe. It is to Halo what the Animatrix was to the Matrix - an exploration of the history and lore of the series coupled with some original stories in animated form.

The stories range from a rundown of the Halo backstory from its origins through the three main games, to alternate stories involving Spartans other than the Master Chief. The man himself does appear in several of the stories along with Cortana and other Halo personalities. All are entertaining and recommended for any serious fan of the Halo series.

Halo Legends is a compilation of seven short animated films. The films vary in style and offer new views and material from the Halo setting. If you consider this as Halo's Animatrix you won't go far wrong.

The highlights for me were the exploration of the Halo universe's history and forerunner mythos, and the 'The Duel' which was an entertaining take on the Elites imagined as Samurai. Though disappointing that the alien culture was not more 'alien' the episode more than makes up for it in its quality and imagery.

The biggest disappointment was the episode "Odd One Out", the inclusion of which was jarring. The episode seems to be aimed at a completely different audience to the others, and though there were moments of humour overall it detracts from the rest of the collection.

I don't think this DVD is worth the RRP, but if you enjoy the Halo setting this is well worth picking up if you spot it at a bargain price.
