Product Description

After auditioning for the part as a singing geisha at a dubious bar, Lena and eleven other lucky girls are sent to work at a posh underground nightclub reserved exclusively for Russia s upper-crust elite. They are to be a sideshow attraction to the rest of the club s entertainment, and are billed as the famous singing caryatids. Things only get weirder from there. Secret ointments, praying mantises, sexual escapades, and grotesque murder are quickly ushered into the plot. The Russian literary master Victor Pelevin holds nothing back, and The Hall of the Singing Caryatids, his most recent story to be translated into English, is sure to make you squirm in your seat with utter delight.

4.0 out of 5 stars Metamorphasis for the 21st Century 19 Aug 2013
By Thomas Izaguirre - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Just as Franz Kafka's famous tale of an ordinary man turned inexplicably into a giant insect became an icon of modernist angst, this amusing take on the concept spoofs post-Soviet Russia in its shameless decadence. Both stories dealt with the preservation of identity but this one takes a sly and political approach. A secret government organization fighting to preserve the national character hatches a bizarre scheme to entertain the power elite with an end towards weeding out the productive versus the profligate. The entertainment recruits a group of women to serve as living statues capable of moving around in such ways as to satisfy any whim. The means for this involves technology that eventually backfires in a totally unexpected way. A good subway or vacation drive read!

This is a good bit of fun, but recycles Pelevin's favourite themes from earlier writing in very similar ways with very similar cliches.

4.0 out of 5 stars Haiku Review 20 July 2013
By J. Edgar Mihelic - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
In a review, the reader tries to create a sense of the book; the task is to boil down the essence of the work and to summarize and give opinion about the quality of the object in a very subjective manner. I am making a project of finding that essence in the most constrained manner possible. Here, I present you with a haiku review. I hope you like the review and take under consideration a purchase of the work.
