This is a thoroughly engaging account of life as WWII Bomber Command aircrew from training, through operational missions, until the fateful moment that the author's crew has to bale out of their 76 Sqn Halifax over occupied Europe. He tells the story in an engaging and personal fashion from the perspective of all the crew; some died, some were captured and some evaded capture thanks to the escape and resistance movements in the occupied countries. It is the sacrifice made and danger these brave people placed themselves and their families in, that really captured my attention and won my admiration. As usual, Tom writes in the way that RAF aircrew think, a self effacing way that makes little of personal sacrifice and bravery but much of the danger to the escape movement personnel. It's a winner from start to finish and would make an excellent gift.
