Product Description

CD Description

Curt Smith, of Tears for Fears, new solo album Halfway, pleased. The album's 15 introspective, filmic tracks range include the yearning ballad Seven of Sundays (which also appears as a bonus track, sung in duet with French artist SO), the lush harmonies of Greatest Divide, the compelling progression of Two and the hypnotic rhythms of Addict. The album includes as additional bonus tracks acoustic versions of Seven of Sundays and Coming Out and a live version of Snow Hill. All the songs except Seven of Sundays (written by Charlton Pettus and Chesney Hawkes) were co-written by Smith and Pettus.

About the Artist

Curt Smith is a musician, singer and songwriter, whose soaring voice is instantly recognizable to the millions of worldwide fans of Tears for Fears, the British group he co-founded in 1981. Still an active, acclaimed musician more than two decades later, Smith released his second solo album Halfway, pleased via his own KOOK Media imprint in May 2008. In addition to his solo career, the prolific Smith has also written music for television and is collaborating on a theatrical musical. His next creative goal is to compose for film. 'The idea of adding a visual component to the lyrical and musical composition,' he says, 'appeals to me.' Smith, now a naturalized U.S. citizen, originally hails from Bath, England, where he and Roland Orzabal met when both were teenagers. They first formed a band at school, for which Smith taught himself to play bass guitar 'we needed a bass player!' and later formed the band Graduate, which achieved fame in Europe, and released its only album in 1980. After disbanding Graduate, Smith and Orzabal founded Tears for Fears. TFF s debut album, 1982 s landmark 'The Hurting,' went on to produce three international bestselling singles 'Change,' 'Mad World,' and 'Pale Shelter' each with indelible lead vocals provided by Smith. Their 1985 sophomore album, 'Songs from the Big Chair,' was even more successful, yielding hits including 'Everybody Wants to Rule the World' (memorably sung by Smith), 'Shout,' and 'Head Over Heels' (which Smith co-wrote). The duo spent the next several years recording their 1990 album 'The Seeds of Love,' which proved to be another bestseller the world over, but Smith left the band shortly after its release. 'It had become unbearable,' he says now. 'This was due to fame as much as to the personal friction between Roland and me. I could either stop altogether, or continue in a better environment on my own. I moved to New York and found the latter.' Smith acclimated to life in New York by hosting an MTV show, as well as a new music radio show that was syndicated to over 300 U.S. colleges, and by teaching a music industry course at New York University. Then, in 1995 a mutual friend introduced Smith to songwriter-guitarist Charlton Pettus. 'I liked him, even though he used the word meritocracy in the first sentence he spoke to me,' Smith jokes. 'I liked his passion. I d spent so much time around people in the industry whose prime concern was business and income, that talking to someone whose love of music was so obvious made me realize why I d become a musician in the first place.' During 2001 Smith began work on what was to become 'Halfway, pleased,' but the project soon had to be put on hold: he had begun speaking to Roland Orzabal again after 9 years of silence. Their conversations culminated in TFF reforming for 2004 s 'Everybody Loves A Happy Ending,' which led to a worldwide tour, so it wasn t until 2006 that Smith had time to resume work on 'Halfway, pleased.' The semi-autobiographical album explores Smith s relationships with his children, parents and friends. 'I prefer writing slightly cryptic lyrics,' he confides, 'that take some thought, and rely on the things that are left unsaid but hinted at.' Even the title is autobiographical, Smith notes, with its all-important comma: 'I figure I m about halfway through life,' he smiles, 'and I m quite pleased.'

Very Pleased 7 Sep 2007
By I. H. C. Mellor VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have only just bought this album and have to say how much I am enjoying listening to it. I think Curt has a great voice and brings the music out beautifully. I particularly enjoy 'Halfway Pleased' and 'Addict' but the other songs also have a haunting quality which I find very moving. Another thing I like about this album is it's simplicity. As a musician myself I appreciate this simplicity, there is nothing at all complicated, it is all very easy on the ear with lots of space for the music to move around in. An excellent album, well worth buying.

This album has been around for a few years now in demo form. Available from Curts websites, but here at long last we have the finished album.

This album follows the Mayfield album which was excellent, but Halfway pleased see's Curt doing quite average music again. The song Addict even in its old demo form was brilliant and I am pleased that the feel of the tracj has been kept and this final version is worth gettin this album for! But otherwise the tracks Perfect day (This sounds like it could be a Cardigans track. If you know first band on the moon, this track could have been taken straight from it!) and Seven of Sundays (the lead single) are good solid songs. But the rest of the album although not bad, will not live long in the memory. In summary a average album with 1 very very good track on it.

Everybody say "Pleased" 21 Jun 2008
By A. Novy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I'm not going to mess around--I'm a big fan of Tears for Fears and have been for years. But Halfway, Pleased isn't a Tears for Fears album. This is Curt Smith at his most personal, holding up a pane of glass so you can peer into his world, making you feel like a welcome guest. With just the right mix of acoustics and electronics, Halfway, Pleased will have something for any lover of sensual melodies, delicate harmonies, and Smith's airy, urgent voice tying them all together.

Standout tracks:
"Seven of Sundays" A gentle, musical caress exemplifying and celebrating love in its purest form. A shining gem of a piece.

"Greatest Divide" Should hit close to home with anyone who has acknowledged the end of a relationship.

"Addict" Haunting, mesmerizing, and beautiful.

"Halfway Pleased" Curt's voice is imbued with the ache of wondering whether or not one's arrival into the world was entirely wanted.

"Who You Are" A more intimate, calmer version than what appears on Everybody Loves a Happy Ending.

"Snow Hill (live)" Curt's soaring voice, gorgeous piano accompaniment, and the spark of a live audience will keep this song on repeat.

Normally I like harder, more aggressive music, but Halfway, Pleased has a welcome spot in my collection because of its elegant, poignant beauty; the more I listen to it, the more I like it.

Long Awaited, But DEFINITELY Worth the Wait!!! 7 Sep 2007
By Suzanne E. Olden - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This CD is AWESOME! Curt's latest solo effort is an amazing mix of styles and even languages! Written prior to his reunion with Roland Orzabal and their Everybody Loves A Happy Ending CD (Tears For Fears) it's release was pushed back to accomodate an amazing TFF tour. While all of the tracks showcase Curt's lyrical and lush (yet understated) voice, Seven of Sundays, Snow Hill and Halfway Pleased show it off best. Snow Hill is a live version that was recorded during TFF's 2004 tour. Seven of Sundays also has a duet version with French singer SO. A video of it is available on Curt's myspace page, or at [...] and is an incredibly sensous version. A few are "re-do's" of older solo songs - Snow Hill was on the Mayfield (a group he and Charlton Pettus started) and Aeorplane CD's; Aeroplane and Where Do I Go? were all covered on the Aeroplane CD; and Who You Are was also on the TFF CD Everybody Loves A Happy Ending, in a slightly different version. I will admit that I have been a TFF and more importantly a Curt fan for more years than I care to admit, but his voice is incredible and the songs are deep, thought provoking and total "ear-candy"! I completely recommend this to anyone who has even an inkling of musical taste.

Halfway Pleased 13 Oct 2007

This is a very quiet, serene album from Curt Smith. It should be enjoyable to any true Tears for Fears fans. One can hear Curt's influence in many TFF songs through his solo endeavors.
