Product Description

Author and anthropologist Caplan plunges into the complex domain of contemporary spirituality where she boldly faces the grave distortions and fraudulent claims to power that characterise the spiritual path in our times. Dozens of first-hand interviews with students, respected teachers and masters, together with broad research are synthesised into a treatment of the modern spiritual scene to assist readers in avoiding the pitfalls of this precarious pass.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting book, misleading title, 4 Jun 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Halfway Up the Mountains: The Error of Premature Claims to Enlightenment (Paperback)
Having studied with two of the teachers extensively quoted in the book, I was interested to read the opinions of others who had met these now spiritual celebrities. The book chips away at the edge of the illusions characteristic of spiritual seekers like myself. We have many aspirations to become, and these are the obstacles to our understanding. However, the book perpetuates the seeker's myth that enlightenment is something difficult to attain, something that must be earned through hard work and sacrifice. This is perhaps the hardest thing for the aspirant to accept, that awakening is a journey down the mountain, not up it. Halfway up the mountain is a good place to stop. Reality begins when the climbing ceases.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book about what "enlightenment" really is, 8 July 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Halfway Up the Mountains: The Error of Premature Claims to Enlightenment (Paperback)
There are A LOT of spiritual books on the market, and even more New Age books, but in many ways they are all the same. Halfway Up the Mountain goes straight to the core of the REAL challenges that REAL people who are dead-serious about the spiritual path will face. You only learn these things by complete immersion in the spiritual path...or by being fortunate enough to find a rare book like this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars I wouldn't want to be on the spiritual path without this boo, 8 July 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Halfway Up the Mountains: The Error of Premature Claims to Enlightenment (Paperback)
I wouldn't want to be on the spiritual path without this book. You will find within it previously unpublished material by some of today's most respected and brilliant spiritual teachers. It is a book about what the spiritual path is really about, instead of some cosmic smorgasboard that you find in cotemporary New Age spirituality. This is THE spiritual book you want to read this year.
