* Long before the break Of Dawn, Tony Orlando was the voice of many of the greatest pop records of the early 1960s. The demos he cut for the likes of the Drifters and Ben E King are the stuff of legend. His own records - all written, arranged and produced by the biggest names in Brill Building pop - are still stunning after more than 40 years.
* This package features the A and B sides of all 11 of Tony's Epic 45s, plus five tracks that were exclusive to his one and only album for the label.
* Contributors to these sessions include Gerry Goffin, Carole King, Burt Bacharach and Hal David, Jack Keller, Cynthia Weil, Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman.
* The package is handsomely illustrated with label shots of each and every one of Tony's singles and the original Epic album.
* A fabulous instant history of post-Rock`n'Roll American Pop, without a Yellow Ribbon anywhere in sight.

Before the dawn of "Dawn",
By Anton Coy "Ant" (Johannesburg, South Africa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Halfway to Paradise: the Complete Epic Masters 1961-1964 (Audio CD)
Before he was coaxed out of retirement to front the slick confections produced by Dawn, Tony Orlando had already had a previous career as a soloist. Ranging from smooth balladeer to "white soul" in the more uptempo numbers, he had already established himself as a fine interpreter of a number of high-quality songs. This CD focusses on his output at Epic between 1961 and 1964 and is a clear testimony to his qualities as a solo aritst. With a poor record in terms of chart success, made worse in the UK by the covers made by Billy Fury, Orlando packed in the music business as a performer during the mid-Sixties, before his re-emergence with Dawn. For those people who were unaware of what he had done before, this well-annotated CD will come as something of a revelation. Whether it's slower numbers such as "Bless You" and "Halfway To Paradise" or the rather more funky "Talkin' About You" and (especially) "Chills", you will only be disappointed by a few duds (mainly B sides) that were thrown in to give a fuller account of his career at Epic. That's the only reason I lopped off one star. For the rest, it's very enjoyable and great value for money.

HALFWAY TO PARADISE - TONY ORLANDO CD,
By
This review is from: Halfway to Paradise: the Complete Epic Masters 1961-1964 (Audio CD)
Packed full of great songs - Tony Orlando did the original versions of familiar hits from the British charts in the sixties, such as Billy Fury's "Halfway to Paradise" and others. A very talented performer and if you are a fan of oldies you will certainly love this great CD like I did. Check out Tony Orlando's original of "Bless You" that charted for him over in the U.K. and was not, to the best of my knowledge, covered by anyone else.

great and nostalgic,

What a great voice is that of Tony Orlando - a voice and phrasing which even influenced The Beatles; when I saw The Beatles all those years ago they opened their set with Beautiful Dreamer using the same arrangement as the version on this CD; also a really great song is here which I thought had been lost forever 'Chills.'
Oh there are one or two songs in there for the ride but by and large a really great album from one of the best voices ever in pop.

Great early rock and roll,
By Charles Blume - Published on Amazon.com

Halfway to Paradise CD is a wonderful collection of the early 1960's rock and roll sound. There are some great gems included such as Halfway to Paradise, Bless You, Am I the Guy, My Baby's a Stranger and others. I have the feeling that Tony Orlando's early recordings do not get the recognition that they deserve. Here is a great collection of that early 60's sound!
