Product Description

Terrifying serial killer thriller set in the gritty Glasgow of the near future, from the bestselling author of the Logan McRae series.

There are worse things than the death penalty…

They call them halfheads: convicted criminals, surgically mutilated and lobotomized by the State, then sent out to do menial jobs in the community so everyone will know what happens when you break the law. There are no appeals, no reprieves, and no one ever comes back. Until now.

Dr Fiona Westfield, one of the most prolific serial killers Glasgow has ever seen, is waking up. Surrounded by blood and death and darkness.

William Hunter has risen through the ranks since putting Westfield away; now he’s Assistant Network Director, in charge of police actions. But a routine murder investigation is about to embroil him in an appalling conspiracy.

The vast connurb blocks on Glasgow’s deprived south side are ready to explode. Eleven years ago the VR riots killed millions – now someone wants to start them all over again. And Will is being dragged back into a past he desperately wants to forget…

Glasgow in the future, searing heat and monsoons, scrubbers in the sky, skyscraper living units that have become slums, and a police force that needs Thrummers, Whompers and Zappers to go about their business. The halfheads are convicted criminals who have been facially disfigured, lobotomized and set to menial duties. However, one isn't quite like the others and wants revenge. Macbride's black humour and Glasgow repartee are still present, as are the gruesome details of brutal murders, disfigurement and gory firefights. Towards the end, it feels like participating in a computer game of Quake or Duke Nukem.

Not his best work, though if you like the blood and guts aspect of Macbride this will suit you, the more delicate natured will probably find it disagreeable.

By L. Hay VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I admit to being a huge fan of Mr MacBride. In this one he leaves my native Aberdeen and moves to the future in Glasgow. There is still the odd merry quip when he introduces the characters speaking in dialect, but somehow there is something missing.
I admit that I am not a fan of sci-fi and in all fairness this book is not over the top, but I found it just did not hit the spot. It was overly simple.
He attempts to be gruesome but it did not shake me at all.
It is a good read, I do not deny, but he is much happier in Aberdeen with Logan MacRae and D.I. Steele. He should stick to straightforward crime.

my goodness, what a story, Iv read and am used to reading the great stories involving Logan McCrae and his motley crew where the stories are good and quite horrific sometimes.
But this one by Stuart macbride is quite amazing, Its got you on the edge of your seat from almost page one and continues right through the book. To read about all the familiar areas of Glasgow only much further in the future makes this book hard to put down.
I suggest you read it and see what i mean. My husband has just finished it and was just as blown away as me. No wonder it took two years to write. well done stuart, try a follow-up as I think there could be one anyway.

Sci-fi disappointment
After devouring all the Logan McRae books, I can only hope the author gets back to his last. This was ridiculous tripe. SF should be left to Frank Herbert and his successors.

Dire!
This book was depravity at the highest level and it does not reflect the true talent of Mr MacBride's writing in the crime genre. I really felt like I wasted my time reading this.

Total, total dreck.
If you've loved other MacBride novels, this just doesn't hold a candle to them. It's half baked, predictable, almost playground game-esque. Read more
