Review

A beautifully written story of secrets, lies, grief and, ultimately, redemption, charmingly handled by this very promising new writer. (Joanne Harris )

Jane Davis's beautifully written debut is a worthy winner of the Daily Mail/Transworld First Novel Award. There is nothing of the novice about her technique, which shows all the confidence of a natural-born writer. (John Harding, Daily Mail)

This is a thought-provoking and beautifully crafted novel that will keep you entralled until the very last page. (The People's Friend)

5.0 out of 5 stars Contemporary and engaging 3 July 2011
Format:Paperback
An extremely well-written, touching and thought-provoking novel which is clearly deserving of the Daily Mail Prize. The book is engaging to the point of being addictive - a great holiday read without being too lightweight. Jane's is a new contemporary voice who for me, has echoes of Kate Atkinson. She demonstrates real talent in producing a thought-provoking story that, while full of rich complexity, remains accessible to all.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable debut! 4 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
Jane Davis' debut novel was chosen as one of our reading group reads and, apart from a couple of minor issues (involving grammatical errors which spoilt the book for a couple of people), was very well received and enjoyed by the majority of the group. It certainly raised much discussion and debate involving relationships and the adoption system in the 1970's, which is always a good sign that people have liked it!

A very easy, light, thought provoking read which, although predictable to a certain degree, is nonetheless, strangely captivating. Well done on a delightful read which is certainly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars review of half truths and white lies 14 Oct 2009
By Kandy
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Ihave just finished this book. It was a fabulous read. Very few characters and you get to know them really well.
The plot is a complex family situation with problems and secrets caused by the actions of the characters.
It was a really easy read (sunny afternoon in a deck chair type). Couldn't wait to get to the end of the story to see if I had worked out all the little sub-plots. A good first novel by Jane Davis - I look forward to her next one. Do read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Lovely Book 7 Oct 2009
Format:Paperback
This is an insightful and thought provoking book and delightful to read. It is the sort of plot that just takes over and makes you read on until there are no more pages left to turn. I found it to be refreshingly original in places which is always a bonus and very believable.

It will be a hard act to follow for the author but I hope she soon releases her next one. I shall be buying it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A well written book 6 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed the twists and turns in this book even though you knew where the ending was going , the path to it wasn't so obvious. The characters all had depth to them and as complicated as their relationships to each other were, I completely bought into them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cracking tale, beautifully told 29 Jun 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I wasn't sure I'd like this book - don't all stories contain half-truths? But, having started it, I couldn't stop. I'd describe the novel as a modern-day family saga, written from both male and female points of views. The writing is deft and touching, and you can't help feeling for the characters. In places the story is heart-breaking, but don't worry too much because the ending is perfect. It's easy to see what earned this book its Daily Mail award, even though I actually preferred one of Davis's later novels (I Stopped Time).

Just a tiny quibble. Some of the cemetery details didn't seem wholly authentic to me, though they worked well enough in the book.

Full of feeling, this is a story to savour.

(Disclosure: the author is known to me - we met at the London Book Fair 2014 - but she does not know I have read or reviewed her book.)
