Format: Audio CD
Half Seas Over (a old term to denote a drunken sailor!) is a collaboration
between pianist Elan Mehler and singer Adam McBride-Smith. The music
which has come into the listening world by way of the thirteen tracks in
this collection is a curious jazz/blues/country hybrid which, moreover,
engages our hearts and imagination in a calm and confident way.

Mr McBride-Smith has a voice which is very easy to listen to. His ability
to hold back and let the songs speak through him without the need to
over-egg the pudding is as charming as it is admirable. Mr Mehler is a
fine piano player. His gentle lyrical style serves the material equally well.

The duo, together with their sympathetic ensemble, create a laid-back
ambience which understands the value of economy and restraint.

It's very hard to separate out the highlights because it's all very good,
so I'll pick one track from the top, one from the tail and one dead-centre
just to give you a small taste of the joys awaiting you.

Opening track 'Get Me To The Station' steps out in fine jazzy raiments, its
frisky double bass leading the way into the heart of the gently rolling
arrangement. The squeezebox chatters around Mr McBride-Smith's laconic
vocal like a old tar coming home from the sea with a tasty tale to tell.

'Into The Night' is a light and breezy composition which had me thinking
about Paul Simon from time to time. The pithy lyrics recount a piquant
story of life on the city streets. The vivid imagery is wonderfully realised.

Final track 'Long Way Down' is a beautiful song; a touching ballad as old as the hills.

Some great original tracks on here and a nice progression from After Suite . Sublime vocals and perfectly matched accompaniment.
