The voice of the teen protagonist grips you from the very first page. Yes, it is a frightening book. Yes, it is something that is, in parts, uncomfortable to read. But it is an invaluable contribution to teen fiction, about a theme too important to ignore.

Icie's ordinary life is plunged into chaos when her parents, who work for the Government, reveal they must leave for a secret bunker in Vegas, or perish in an imminent terrorist attack. When Icie's parents are taken away by security at the airport, she is forced to head for the mountain hideout without them, on the way picking up a makeshift family in the form of an exuberant cheerleader, an abandoned 13-year-old, an enigmatic handsome lad she falls for from the start, and an affectionate black cat named Midnight. However, isolation proves to have its own fears and dangers. Icie finds it harder to protect herself from terrorism and its effects than she once thought, and harder still to manage the issues amongst her new 'family'.

You will probably cry whilst reading this, but you'll also be uplifted by a young person's desire to survive, and to protect strangers whom she comes to love. What I liked best was Sara Grant's ability to tackle an emotive idea without schmaltz, and to give no easy solutions. Icie is not portrayed as a hero or an anti-hero; she is human, like you or me. Sometimes you may be disappointed, or shocked, by the decisions she makes, but she makes it clear that in a world of life or death, there are no easy options.

5.0 out of 5 stars Half Lives - Full Marks!!! 14 May 2013
By Mo
Format:Paperback
I just finished reading Half Lives last night and had to go online today and write a review. I was blown away by the voice (well really the voices) of this book. The subject is very disturbing but the way that Sara Grant captures a young person's take on cataclysmic events is so real and so genuinely funny at times too the reader always feels connected, never left out of the events. And her use of original language is genius. It's a book that makes you question and makes you think. Half Lives invaded my thoughts endlessly over the few days that I read it and I think the 'half life' for its longterm effect will be quite some time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Half Lives -- entirely superb 7 Jun 2013
By NENK
Format:Paperback
HALF LIVES is gripping, moving, witty, heart-warming and thought-provoking. It is also a technical tour de force. Sara Grant pulls off a hugely ambitious storytelling structure with apparent ease. I have so much admiration for this book -- the story it tells and the way it's told. I wholeheartedly recommend HALF LIVES -- it's an exciting, engaging and poignant read.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Half Measures Here 6 Jun 2013
By Coolbex
Format:Paperback
Although Half Lives deals with some difficult and disconcerting ideas, the author never forgets she's writing a story. Grant creates a very well written and very human exploration of two frightening futures, keeping the reader hooked from start to finish. This is one of the few books that has kept me up into the night, because I had to finish it. Half Lives really pulls you in and get's you thinking.
